Recently went in to sample the traditional ales, stood at bar for 10 minutes while the staff just walked past me, never acknowledged the fact I was even there and served the locals who had arrived at the bar after me and then stood chatting, so we left and went to the Rose and Crown pub where we were served... This is the smarter of the three pubs in Bellingham. The Rose and Crown does simpler good in huge portions, The Bull doesn't do food at all, and this place does good food in sensible portions and is aiming for the slightly more upmarket walker. Beer is very good, staff seemed a little indifferent when we were there but they... More

I stayed here when walking the Pennine Way. On my arrival in the evening after a long walk, the bar was very busy and the staff working under pressure but they still had the nous to waive the check-in procedure until I had quenched my thirst. The room I was allocated was a double for sole use on the second floor.... The main course was lovely, can recommend the homemade burgers. When it came to the puddings, we waited 30 mins for them to arrive. I ordered a coffee, which arrived, I waited for 10 mins more, before having to ask for a fresh cup complete with some milk & sugar please! Aloof serving staff, who were more interested in chatting... As a party of 4 we enjoyed a great bar meal - informal, very welcoming, good service and excellent food. Much better than at Riverdale, which would not serve us at all as they were too busy! Thank you to all who were on duty the evening of 28 July!

We ate here several times this week as we found it to be the best value and tasting food and beer in the area where we were staying. Cannot fault anything here as it is all good. We ordered a burger the babe which was the size of 3 with bacon on top and served with delicious home cooked chips... More

Eat in the bar or the restaurant, all the same price. There is an extensive menu with main courses starting at £8. We chose the "pie of the day" which was steak and ale, individually cooked with a shortcrust pastry. Fresh vegetables included carrots, mange tout and baby sweetcorn with a choice of potatoes for £9.00 a head. Although there... More

Our room was very comfortable and quite spacious, with a good modern bathroom. The hotel is really a pub with rooms above it - and the pub is very popular indeed, to the point of being quite noisy in the evenings. The food, which is served in a pleasant dining room, is really very good: the menu is varied, and... More
