The Howard is ideally placed for our family get-togethers, and we arranged a late lunch this afternoon. There were six of us, all adults, and four dogs too. It's lovely to find somewhere so dog-friendly but still so clean and with such good food. We were seated by the fire (a great spot for a damp January day!) and made... More

Called in here for a lunch time snack with an ex work colleague/friend. The service was appalling and we waited over three quarters of an hour for two ploughman lunches. Unfortunately, my friend had to return to work so we had to leave without our food. On leaving the barmaid was quite abusive, telling us we had not been there... More

I cannot give a higher mark because the bathroom did not have a mat for the shower and one was expected to come out on the bare linoleum floor. nevertheless the room was warm, clean with wifi and all necessary to make a couple of cups of tea. the staff is very friendly and I had a great abundant breakfast

Called in for a couple of drinks after a couple of laps around the nearby Talkin Tarn, on a bleak December afternoon we enjoyed a warm welcome during what looked like a busy lunch time service. Appeared to be a mix of locals and visitors but attentive service from the staff helped create a warm welcome - choice of 3... More

2nd time spending New Year in Brampton at the Howard Arms Hotel. The Hotel has been cleaned up since our last stay in 2012/13. Better room this time but smelt of disinfectant for two days and the carpet was filthy in the room. Appeared someone may have chundered on it before our stay. Great food and excellent breakfasts. They ran... More

Sorry - but this doesn't fulfil our usual criterion of "would we come again?" Not this one. The 'festive season special' was certainly a bargain price-wise but it was one of the tiredest pieces of sea bass I've seen in a long time. There was a brave attempt at presentation but it wasn't executed very well. The 'chef' appeared at... More

Passed through Thursday night to meet some friends and enjoyed a lovely evening of jazz at the Howard's, food was exceptional, we had the sea bass and the lamb cutlets, we even attempted desserts .... great, homemade, this place is always worth a visit when passing through, thanks.

Six people in on a Wednesday lunchtime? It didn't bode well. However, the chap in charge seemed eager to please and was very friendly. The beer was fine, the menu - we chose from a specials board - was standard fayre with one or two exceptions. We chose 2 for £11.95: Cumberland sausage with apple sauce and chips plus a... More

I stopped in here on the way back from a business trip and as soon as I walked through the front door I felt like I was in my own living room. The smiles from all staff and attentiveness was exceptional. I ordered a simple steak and ale pie seeing as it's generally a safe bed when on the road... More

I've reviewed this excellent value hotel before, and stayed there again last week. I'd like to add to my previous praise, that the breakfast really is as good as anywhere. After the self-service selection of cereals, yoghurts, fruit juices and fresh fruit, the full "English" breakfast is served, consisting of fried egg on fried bread, bacon, sausage, black pudding, haggis,...
