We decided to stay over at The Staincliffe to celebrate our anniversary, and try the steaks that we had heard so much about. We were definitely not disappointed ! Having visited South Africa every year, where the steaks are amazing we have very high expectations, which most UK restaurants fail to meet. We ordered 2 fillet steaks, one medium and... More

Felt as if everything was done on a shoe string. Radiators not working in the room and also other rooms that our friends stayed in. We were a bit suspicious when there was an electric plug in heater in the room! I know austerity is character building but a very cold bathroom did not help when having a shower! The... More

Totally different experience from last time I tried to book here. Booking was easy and the staff more than helpful in the arrangements. On the day the Christmas meal was excellent and the staff could not be more accommodating. The meal went smoothly and the service was excellent. I could not fault the hotel. We did not stay in the... 20 people went for a Christmas dinner meal. I expected bowls of sprouts, mashed potatoes, carrots, roast potatoes and peas. Instead we were given yorkshire puddings which were so leathery that we should have been given a carving knife to cut through them. Most of us could not eat them. Instead of the bowls of veg I expected, there were... More

It smells of pump in the corridors like a bursted sewer? Quite off putting when going to dinner or breakfast. The pumpy eggy sort of gas farty smell really stinks... The rooms are beyond tired and dirty. The bar staff were young and not interested... The chef finishes bang on time so if last orders is at 8pm, 7.50pm is... More

Attended my friend's wedding here in November and I was actually pleasantly surprised. The Baron Room where they both got married was gothic, atmospheric and perfectly intimidate. The food was also fab! The baked cheesecake we had for dessert was absol to die for. What I would say is that the wine they have on offer is pretty horrid. The... More

We stayed one night and were very disappointed with the standard of the whole hotel. The bedroom was particularly poor, with austere decor and woefully poor bathroom. The worst part was the foul smell in the corridor - I had to hold my breath every time I walked down it! Would not go back.

My husband and I found ourselves up in the North East earlier this week and needed to stay over unexpectedly. Called at this hotel and staff could not have been more helpful we had their last room and it was lovely with a fantastic sea view and a great breakfast next morning.

We visited this hotel recently for a reception after a funeral. The bar area appeared to be freshly redecorated as did the function room. It all looked very smart and modern. Great views over the seafront onto the beach and the North Sea. The food was excellent and the staff very attentive and friendly.

My family and I booked this family room last minute, on arrival the room was immediately noticeably dirty with grime and dead insects on the chairs. No management available to help but I could speak to someone the following morning. The next morning the manageress denied being in charge and took my contact but never rang me back and ignored...
