Attended Sunday Dinner as guests of friends. Hotel clean and tables nicely prepared and decorated. First course of "French" onion soup was a travesty - atrocious, thin, watery and grossly over salted - and missing the reason we ordered the soup - served without the traditional slice of toasted baguette or bread with melted cheese - the specific reason we ordered this dish. First time ever that I have seen French onion soup served like this - even in Nepal and Bhutan they got it spot on. Cauliflower served with the main meal as hard as concrete and cold in the middle - probably frozen and not microwaved long enough. Very parsimonious portions of dessert and the Christmas pudding was dry without a trace of moisture. The guest sitting next to me was served her dessert garnished with a four inch long human hair and refused to eat it. The young girl serving coffee was in a strop and literally threw the cups and saucers on the table and when a guest complained rudely said " can't you see I am busy ". My conclusion is that the chef needs retraining to learn how to cook proper French onion soup and the staff need a crash course in courtesy to diners.

Thank you for your review, though I do feel that it very harsh. As a chef myself, I have trawled though about 6 recipes for French Onion and cannot find one with a thickening agent, though before the advent of so many gluten intolerant diners, as a chef myself, I did used to use a small amount of flour to take away any grease from the butter but it isn't supposed to be a thick soup. While I admit you have a point about the crouton, it wasn't a something mentioned by any other diner and not one person on the day said it was too salty. With regards to the main course, we use only fresh vegetables (With the exception of peas) and try to keep the them 'Al dente, ' though I'm sorry if they weren't as hot as they should have been. They perhaps shouldn't have been packed in so tightly and it would have been better to do more smaller dishes. However, I personally went along both tables to ask if everyone was enjoying their meal, so after only hearing positive comments, it is very disappointing to be criticised so heavily across social media but I suppose that is a symptom of the times we live in. The chefs all have short hair or none at all and the waiting on staff all had their hair tied back, so it's difficult to imagine how this one long strand managed to find its way on to someone's dessert without anyone noticing. We do try to give young workers a chance but that was poor behaviour from the team member in question and as such she will no longer be asked in to do any more shifts, as she had been with us long enough to know better. While of course you are perfectly entitled to your expert opinions and to post them on sites such as this in such a lacerating manner, it's no wonder hospitality suffers from not being able to attract staff.

I am so sorry to have written this review. However, what a dreadful stay. We visit the Isle of Man each year and love the people, the island, and the locals' hospitality, that was until..... Our 3rd stay at the Wellbeck, all previous visits having been fine.... This time, a party of 9 of us arrived to do some motorcycling (I'm probably the youngest at 54 so not exactly he'll raisers). Day 1, they had no record of our booking, despite having paid in advance and having a booking reference. Too be fair they made space for us in their, very tired and rather musty smelling apartments ( I let it go that 3 if the group were on pull out beds, despite having paid full price, the same as every other, non-biker...bear with...you will see where this is going). Fast forward to night 4, and we reserve a table in the restaurant, ordered beef stew and dumplings, the waiter/duty manager placed down (and 5 other, beef stew and dumplings). When I complained that there were no dumplings, he said that they had run out....dishonest? (you can decide) ...Sorry, also forgot to mention that the food order was wrong, which he reprimanded a young lady (15 at a guess) in public ..Nice man. Anyway, and going to try to keep brief but deserts were the same story....sticky toffee pudding with custard please...20 mins later...no custard (at least this time didn't try to pass it off and hope that we didn't notice). Finally as we left the restaurant to take our drinks to the lounge asked "what's happening with this bill". So whilst sitting in the lounge, said chap, leaves a completely incomprehensible bill on the table and did not return again all evening (we think that the beef stew without dumplings may have been £15.95, but who knows) in order for us to request a breakdown. As it stands, and readers may note from the time of this review, we have retreated back to our rooms without paying the bill (which we fully intend to pay in the morning, subject to clarification). My point of posting such a negative review is that I genuinely feel that we have been discriminated against and received a different service than other clients within the hotel. Needless to say, we will not be visiting again.

Dear Pete, Well there are a few apologies to make here but it is very obvious that this review is posted in the immediate aftermath what doesn't sound like our the usual experience we provide and parts of it are not quite accurate. I apologise that due to a clerical error (We do make an occasional mistake) your booking was not entered correctly on our chart and we had you down to come on Sunday. Therefore, two of your rooms were upgraded into our newly re-furnished apartments/suites with brand new bathrooms. I am sorry that we didn't offer to make the super-king double bed into twin beds but many of our guests this year have said how comfortable the new sofa beds are and we mistakenly assumed that you would prefer a bed in each room rather than sleep together in the same room. In fact, only one of your party was put into this type of bed, the other one chose it over a single in the bedroom with his companion. The other five members of your group were put into a twin and a family unit as booked. Quite a large part of business relies on the patronage of middle aged men on motorbikes, cycles, in cars, train lovers etc., so there is no way that we would deliberately discriminate against you or any other sections of our wide of guests. I'm obviously very disappointed that your meal didn't go as smoothly as we would have liked, though in defence of my staff, they were approaching the end of a very busy evening. It is clear that it wasn't handled correctly at the time. It looks like some further customer service training will be appropriate. Again, I apologise for this, just as I did yesterday morning when I came to see you in person. It is a pity but I hope with time passing, you will reconsider, as we do not wish to lose you as customers and it would appear that this one incident has negatively coloured what what had been a very enjoyable long weekend. Best regards Michael

We were looking for a place to eat and asked if the hotel restaurant was open to non residents. Greeted positively, led to a table and had a fabulous meal. Staff pleasant and helpful. It was a Saturday night, we hadn't booked and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal, the venue and the staff who served us. Thank you.

I mean, hats off to them, they’ve kept it going when all the other hotels around them have closed, turned into HMOs (corker directly opposite!) or apartments! It’s location has advantages and disadvantages. Bit of a trek uphill from the seafront, and nothing in the way of amenities apart from the Castlemona arcade, so you sit there thinking you can’t really be bothered going out to get your Daily Mail! It’s not exactly a sun trap, so you have to wait until sort of midday to get a bit of heat from the old currant bun, but there again, you avoid the noise and hustle-bustle of the promenade! Lovely place to come for a drink or a meal, and reasonably priced too! Must say it was a nice stay with a bird I met in Liverpool and had shipped in for a few nights hols while the Mrs was away! Nothing to fault here - room and breakfast are both worthy of the stars outside. I would like to stay again sometime, beats the Sefton hands down imo!

LOL. Thank you so much for your positive and quirky review. I think you must have been unlucky with the weather because the sun does shine on the terrace until about 3pm. As you say, we miss the noise of the Promenade but only a couple of 100m either way is the Spar (Which has a small outside seating area), a couple of takeaways, bookies,, hairdressers, Palace Casino, Chinese, Indian and the Savoy restaurants, the Empress Hotel & Piano Bar, so The Welbeck isn't totally isolated. .

The room was very dated, in need of improvement. Certain lights didn't work, despite all the switches being tried. The free standing room light stayed on despite being turned off. One electrical socket I used moved quite alarmingly when I pulled my phone charger out of it. I only discovered this on the last morning when I went to unplug my phone charger. The noise when another guest in an adjacent room flushed their toilet or ran the tap was ridiculously loud, like being under a waterfall! The lift was tiny and not terribly confidence inspiring but worked ok when used. The breakfasts were quite good, a reasonable portion but not over facing. But the staff did forget about us on a couple of occasions. All in all, I didn't terribly enjoy my stay at the Welbeck, I never slept well all the nights I was there. Btw, I did report the lights & electric sockets at reception upon leaving.

Dear Gary, Thank you for staying at the Welbeck and for taking the time to write a review. It is such a shame that you waited until your departure to point out the deficiencies of the electrics because the socket took me 10 seconds to tighten and all the lights were working perfectly, so I could simply have shown you how to operate them. The lift was the largest that we could fit into the space available while remaining viable, is licensed for three people and as you correctly state, it does the job and rarely lets us down. Beds are a very personal thing but we invest well in every one that we buy as to most people, they are still even more important than the WiFi. I'm really sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay but the room was decorated quite recently with top quality Italian wallpaper, the bathroom is modern, your free standing room light was purchased last year, the sofa twelve months earlier and the carpet was only recently laid. Although the furniture isn't new, it is also of classical design in keeping with a Victorian hotel. Although it doesn't sound as if you will be returning here, I highly recommend that you point out any faults as you discover them when you next stay in a hotel as although our extremely hardworking housekeeping team do report things as they find them, it may be that you just haven't managed to ascertain how to use them.
