I stayed at St John's for two weeks, during a summer school. Let me put this way. You get what you pay for. The location is excellent. Just a minute or two walk from the Durham Cathedral and about 10 min walking to Durham market place. Some of the rooms are renovated and some are not. If you are student... More

I was at the College for 2 nights for a Conference and had a lovely modern student room in a new block with ensuite shower and WC - different from my own student days! Good meals were available and the staff were always friendly and helpful. The magnificent Cathedral is only 2 minutes' walk away.

I don't know if I should really write this as I have only visited my offspring (who lived in St John's )but I would hate to think that a prospective student would be put off by the negative reviews. I think she even had the noisy twin room described below (!) but despite this she loved her time in the... More

Stayed with my daughter in a twin room prior to the university open day. In a lovely picturesque situation near to the cathedral. Lovely building from the outside, but what a let down it was once we went in. There was a function on so we couldn't get a hot drink. The room was cold. There was no hot water... More

This is, in most ways, a great place to stay in Durham. The cathedral is two minutes away and the town is quite close. The breakfasts were excellent with a large variety of cereals and fresh and stewed fruit. The cooked element was very tasty. The price is very low. The downsides are two: there is no parking nearby; the... More

At £75 for a twin en-suite this was a bit pricey but the location, right next to the wonderful cathedral couldn't be better. The room was pretty basic but comfortable except there was no heating (it was rather chilly) and no housekeeping service on the Sunday night. The breakfast was adequate and everything was very clean. To summarise, it would... More

With Durham Cathedral across the Bailey, and the river Wear at the back, what better location could one ask for? Whether you want to study, sight-see, or for quiet contemplation, St John's College is ideal. Breakfasts are good. Your room key should enable you to access the library. Staff are helpful, Students, if they happen to be around, are usually... More

The rooms were large, roomy, and plenty warm enough. There was plenty of literature about the area (I hadn't realised Durham was so small, I only had about 2 hours to see it, and saw what I really wanted to see as we were in such a good location, almost next to the Cathedral), housekeeping was good - there was...
