This is not really a "hotel" -- more like rooms above a pub. But it's pretty good. From pre-trip research, I knew that The City is an 18th-century building with recent modifications to include rooms with ensuite. My impression was that it would be marvellously quaint, reeking with character etc. In fact, the room seemed quite basic. And it was... More

The term "City Hotel" may be a bit misleading and maybe it should be renamed "City Hotel and Inn" - because definitely the impression is that it is more a pub or a tavern than a hotel. We were a bit worried by some of the previous adverse reviews but having stayed there for one night in April 2015 we... More

I walked here from the station in just a few minutes. Lots of Italian restaurants a few hundred yards away. On the banks of the river. Overall very pleasant and friendly helpful staff. I had a twin room was hoping to push the beds together but in the event the beds were were at right angles to each other and... More

Just stayed for one night, Saturday 11th April with friends. Both rooms where very clean and comfortable. Some of the previous reviews commented about the noise from downstairs but come on its a pub. We had a very comfortable nights stay and next morning we all tucked into a hearty breakfast with complimentary newspapers. The staff where very helpful and... More

After the last few dreadful reviews, the last one in particular, I feel I have to give a balancing view. I stayed at The City with my partner for three nights in mid-late March 2015. On arrival, on a Thursday in mid-afternoon, we were shown to our room after having gone the through the brief formalities of checking in at... More

Having read the last review I felt compelled to second this opinion and let people know about an equally bad night the previous night (Saturday 28th Feb). My friend and I had a night away as a "treat" saved up for by our families. We had the twin room at the back of the hotel. At first all seemed fine.... More

this was a horrible experience. Hardly any sleep all night. The sound of cars constantly zooming past. VehicleS parked music blaring under our window. Revellers throughout the early hours AND YES THIS WAS A SUNDAY NIGHT. Bins being put out across cobbles. Beer delivered at six with barrels being thrown about. All needed was a plane to fly past low.... More

We stayed just the one night at this pub yet the staff made us really feel at home. They were extremely helpful and friendly. Room was cozy and spotless, location was central, breakfast substantial. And it doesn't do any harm to mention their rather scrummy beers. When we go back to Durham we would certainly stay here again.
