When I'm on business in Durham the Marriott is my preferred choice of hotel. The rooms are spacious and well appointed, the staff are really friendly, and the location is in a quieter part of town, but walking distance to the town and attractions. The food is excellent with plenty of choice for breakfast, and there is also a Starbucks... More

Having spent £300 for my husband, daughter and I to share a room here for three nights, I was expecting everything to be of a relatively high standard. But while they get a lot of things right at the Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County, it falls short in a few areas. High points: - Lovely staff at reception, keen to... More

Travelling up from the South the hotel is only minutes from the A1 and has a great location being situated next to the river and is only a 5 minute stroll away from the centre of Durham and the Castle/Cathedral. Check in was smooth and although we were early for check in we passed the time in the very handy... More

We were very pleased with this hotel. It's located just a few steps from the Elvet Bridge, which means you are basically as close as you're going to get to the Cathedral and Castle. The hotel is small, but you don't get the sense that it's a B & B. Staff at the reception desk were friendly and helpful. The... More

The hotel is a short (£5) taxi ride from the station. It is downhill, so you could walk, but the roads wend their way around the town a bit, so I would go by car. There is a car park if needed. The hotel is also very close to the Cathedral and shops (between five and 10 minutes on foot... More

I stayed here for two nights on a business trip to Durham. The receptionist who checked me in was friendly, efficient and polite. I had booked a larger room to make sure I had sufficient space to work and that was what I got. The reception area was clean but the decor is strange, all fake greco-roman which does not... More

We stayed here while visiting my daughter who is at the university. My wife stayed here on business a while ago and had a fire in her room. The hotel were very good about it and not only upgraded her room but gave her a free two night stay for two with dinner included. When we arrived we also discovered... More

This is a lovely hotel in a great location. We were upgraded on arrival and had a lovely, comfortable big room. The staff were friendly and very accommodating. We didn't have breakfast but but we did have late night room service after a night out and it was top notch. Recommended.

I am surprised at the negative reviews for the Marriott Royal County Hotel in Durham. We stayed there last weekend and my only complaint is that they did not have adapters available to lend us, as most other hotels do. Our ground-floor room was lovely, the breakfast was outstanding, and the staff could not have been more helpful.

Booked a cheap deal so at £72 for the night I cannot complain. The room was big and clean and comfortable. The room was L shaped with a sofa bed in it so created a small sitting area which helped create additional space. The bathroom was large and clean. Closer inspection showed it had been "knocked about a bit" but... More
