There's a lot good about this hotel - it's location, intimacy (it's the smallest Marriott in the chain I think); the friendly staff; the excellent, varied, breakfasts; the large rooms (we were in the Riverside wing, don't know if there are different, but worth punting for) and the leisure club (as always, choose your times as may be inundated with... We arrived on Saturday 30th January and had two double rooms booked through booking.com for one night. Parked up the car and went to reception where we were greeted by two lovely (one male and one female) receptionists, both extremely informative and helpful and very friendly and chatty asking about our weekend in Durham, can I just stay they are... Just returned from a weekend at the Marriott. Staff were absolutely brilliant and managed to make us feel as if we were really valued guests. Nothing was too much trouble and every request was greeted with a smile. Some would say 'that's their job' but what a difference it makes when people actually seem happy to be at work. Well... More

Hotel staff were extremely helpful and happy in their work. The hotel is easily located at the bottom of the cobbled high street, near cafes and restaurants. Our room was very quiet and comfortable with a good hot shower, we found there was a lot of furniture that wasn't needed. The breakfast was vast with fruits, cereals, bread, English breakfast... Stayed as a couple for one night as wanted to have a night out in Durham as never been before! Great hotel, big & clean rooms beds so comfy! Would definitely use again, pool and spa clean and no extra cost. Food and drinks Charges were high but we didn't have a full meal in the hotel. Tea & coffee... More

We were disappointed with the whole event considering the total cost of £750 including overnight stay for my party of 5 adults. We had a benchmark to compare the event with, as we attended the New year gala at the Blackwell Grange hotel in 2014, which was far superior. Here are a number of comments in no particular order:- Firstly... More

Beware this hotel uses Parking Eye to manage its parking. I only visited to have dinner with some work colleagues and was there for 2 hours 37 mins. I now have a lovely letter from parking eye saying I owe £100, which fortunately for them arrive a day after they date they set for when it would have cost me... More

We were disappointed to read of your experience when recently visiting the hotel and whilst it is never our intention for any guest to receive a parking charge notice, we do feel that there is adequate signage on the entrance, exit and around the hotel car park notifying our customers that it is a paid parking area. Warm regards The... More

Statyed here mid January. Great location as you can walk straight out of the hotel and you are 2 min from the city centre. Lovely exec room, in the annex over the leisure club, £99 for a Saturday night, nicely appointed and freshly decorated. Staff friendly & pleasant. Used the swimming pool a couple of times, which was great, but... More

Whilst I admire Marriott's plurality (my companion Book of Mormon) and your corporate philosophy, I have my doubts about the Durham outlet where the paying guests are deemed inferior to the local student population and, for the price of one coffee, invade the public areas for 7 hours a day. In comparison, paying guests are charged £10 a day to... More

Location is good as I was attending graduation at the cathedral next morning early and city centre is easily in walking distance. Hotel is a typical chain, we were upgraded to next level (had chosen standard room at £179!) the upgrade had a minute sitting area and would not have been worth the extra. Dinner was very average, had to... More
