As we arrived for a wedding reception the location looked nice and the place looked pleasant enough, but when entering i realised it was very dated and felt as if i had travelled to the 1970's. Faulty towers to be exact. The service at the bar was pleasant enough but the wine was awful the lemonade was actually carbonated water... more

My wife and I have stayed here on many occasion, since spending our honeymoon here (August 1977). We are pleased to say that standards, high, have not changed and the improvements, carried out over 30 years, have not "degraded" the outlook of the hotel. Service and atmosphere are 5*. An oasis of "country life" 10 mins. from a concrete jungle. more

Hotel is well located in pretty village with friendly local pub, after that matters go downhill. You can imagine this was the place to stay 20 years ago and no one has really spent any money since. The maintaince man has a liking for gaffer tape which can been seen holding carpets together along with the tiles in our bathroom.... more

Thank you for taking the time to review the hotel. We are aware of the need for an upgrade in the hotel. Due to a number of owners over the last few years this has been neglected. We do have an internal programme of redecoration in place at the present time. Customer service is of vital importance to us so...

I've stayed twice at this hotel recently. Staff are very pleasant and willing to help, although not necessarily the best trained. A big plus is that if you're on a budget the rooms are very competitively priced. £40 for a single with full breakfast. But the place is shabby. Beds are bouncy not firm and there's far too much sticky... more

Thank you for taking the time to complete your review. A programme has been implimented in house to replace beds and sections of carpet. I am sorry that the heating did not work during your stay. The system is regulary maintained and a full service is carried out annually. The system is fully operational now. All food served in the...

I recently stayed at this hotel for an event which was taking place there - a dinner and dance. At first glance on arrival the reception area looked reasonably pleasant - however upon checking in and going up to our room I immediatly noticed the carpet - the carpet through the corridors is absolutly threadbare and held together by duct... more

The hotel is old, drab and dreary. I booked a single room and nowadays its not often that you actually get a proper single with tiny single bed and no room to move. Thats what you get here! The bedroom was smaller than my bathroom at home and I probably would have been more comfortable sleeping in my car. The... more

Thank you for your feedback about one of our single rooms. There are number of these rooms and they are small and this is generally reflected in the rate we charge for them. We have tried to modernise them and although they are singles, the beds are all new with good quality mattresses. Naturally, the majority of the bedrooms are...

Before going to the hotel i read a lot of negative reviews about it. I am glad i chose to ignore them. The CHURCHGATE staff could not do enough to make our stay an absolute pleasure. The food quality & choice was exceptional , location was very peaceful but close enough to main road for easy access to explore essex.The... more

The carpet in my room was taped with duck tape as well. The whole room felled outdated and dirty. The temperature in the room was extremely warm but as the window was so dirty; I found it rather unpleasant to open it. The bathroom has not been refurbished since the 70's. The pool looked rather nice, but the changing/shower rooms... more

Having stayed at the Churchgate for a week I can see why there are mixed reviews. Whilst the communal areas are pleasant if a bit fussy, the corridors and bedrooms in the executive wing, where i stayed, are pretty scruffy. Alot of money must have spent to decorate this place in about 1990 and it could definately do with a... more

Stayed here for two nights in November 2007. Room was like a sauna and had constant noise from a fan motor. I never found the motor but it must have been just outside the window somewhere. The wallpaper was peeling and the TV worked on occasions. The remote was beyond redemption and had broken buttons. Tea and coffee was provided... more
