Such a quirky little hotel, originally the first hospital on Orkney which explains the layout and the interesting medical relics in the bar! Lovely comfortable traditional rooms, but with all the mod cons. The television was up to date with all the channels which isn't always the case! The rooms all have a bear on the beds, nice touch by... More

Giffy and Robert who run the West End will go out of their way to help the most demanding of guests, even those who, like us, arrived without a booking in the middle of summer. Their hospitality and knowledge of the islands added immeasurably to our Orkney experience. The food, the service, the conversation was all superb.

Found this place by chance and what a great find. The service was excellent and the meals at night were plentiful and extremely tasty, all home cooking and a great choice. We ate there every night of our stay. The hotel is in a great location not noisy but a couple of minutes from all the shops and amenities. The... More

We ate here early in our trip to Orkney, and enjoyed it so much we ate here 5 nights of our stay - and the quality of the food, and the range of choices, made that an easy decision. The food is fresh, well-cooked and very well presented. Portions are generous, the service is excellent and the menu contains plenty... More

This was a chance find and a good one. The location is quiet yet near to the historic heart of Kirkwall. The rooms were spotlessly clean with all that you needed including a teddy bear. The breakfast was impressive and the dining room pleasantly quiet. Our waiter was the owner who turned out to be very helpful, efficient and since... More

Chose the West End Hotel for an evening meal whilst on holiday, found the building by chance, checked out the menu, the outside decor was traditional and spotless. Our meal and service was excellent, cosy bar area to finish the evening, interacted with charming staff and hosts , very friendly. AH review was distasteful, a shame that somebody can attempt... The four days in this quiet and friendly hotel were delightful. The room was large, airy and charming. The food plentiful and excellently cooked and served. The friendliness of the staff made it a trip to remember. We will return as four days was not enough

When on holiday on Orkney, we regularly eat in the West End. All was well with the food and service. A fine evening spent with family. The owner even has WiFi access as a drawing card to his facility. This I used on Thursday to check up on matters close to our family. It would appear that the owner was... More

We booked into the West End Hotel on the recommendation of friends we were staying with and whilst it had a lot going for it, the few essentials for me, whether it be a 5 star hotel or a pub, are a good nights sleep and internet connection. The hotel was disappointing on both these points. Giffie was absolutely wonderful,... More

We were just visiting the town for a couple hours which only had homes for the most part, so I can't say anything about the rooms. Service was great and lunch was tasty. My first time in Scotland so I asked for a local brew. The attendant was very informative and helpful. The dining area was clean and comfortable. No... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This hotel offers simple comforts but is still in the top two or three places to stay in Kirkwall. In 1824, it was built just outside Kirkwall by a retired sea captain, and became Orkney’s first hospital in 1845. Today, owners Gifford Leslie and Robert Dawson provide a warm welcome and comfortable guest rooms. Each with a shower-only bathroom. The property has been refurbished in the past few years and it now fresh and inviting. Cost-conscious meals are served in a small restaurant and bar. Fully licensed to sell alcohol, the hotel attracts both locals and visitors. The West End Hotel, in many ways, is the ideal blend of old and new. ... more   less
