This hotel has to be the friendliest, most helpful place we have ever stayed! Do not be mislead by the 1st impression. The rooms are comfortable and well serviced; the Staff and Owner could not be more obliging, in all areas, Front Desk; Restaurant and Housekeeping. The food is very good, and the service speedy, despite the fact that the... More

O.k. I'll admit it; this hotel saw it's prime some decades ago, and it is a bit down in the heels, but we sill love it and we will stay there again on our next visit. Amazing location--was the city really built around the hotel? and a great view over the harbor. The staff is very helpful. Quirky 19th century... More

A bog-standard highland hotel in a prime position overlooking the harbour basin with an eccentric lift,. BUT we had a room to rival any. More cupboards and drawers than we could use and the restaurant just hummed with contented activity. There was the surprise. With a full house every night for supper and a satisfying variety on the menu the... More

Loved the location of the Kirkwall hotel. We could spend hours sitting at the window watching life at the harbour. The hotel appears a little tired but to us this had a charm about it. The room was a good size, quiet, extremely clean with a very comfortable bed. Furniture in room is Ikea style and Wifi connection is at... More

Had an overnight stay here.the hotel is nicely located on the harbour-side and has a reasonable Restaurant. But for the price it is a little basic and in need of some updating of the rooms. The staff were helpful and polite but our restaurant reservation was lost between the reception and the dining room, not a problem for this stay... More

We stayed here for one night on our way home from one of the Northern Isles. It was just what I expected really - quite old fashioned, with small rooms but perfectly adequate for what we wanted. The breakfast is included and is pretty good. The only reason I have rated it as average rather than very good was the... More

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Kirkwall Hotel. We had a very nice room, well equipped and overlooking the harbour. And dinner (on our first night, we ate out on our second night) was delicious: cooked with flair and well served. Our only reservation was in the quality of the breakfast. While the kippers and smoked haddock were... More

We stayed here last week for one night in a sea view room. This is a really traditional hotel - slightly dated feel but we liked that. Staff were really helpful and friendly and our room was very comfortable with good view. We had to leave at 6.30 am so they provided us with an early breakfast which was greatly... More

Very much a traditional hotel with quaint elevators with two sets of doors - where you have to close them both before the lift will operate. A real throwback to the forties. There was a dated feel to some aspects, the wallpaper on the stairway was tatty in places as was some aspects of our bedroom, e.g shower and sanitary... More

We stayed here recently whilst visiting for the Folk Festival. Staff were friendly ( like everyone in Orkney), informative and helpful throughout, whether at reception, in the dining room or at the bar. No problem when we curtailed our stay by one night in order to go to Stromness, also got an electric heater promptly provided when it was cold... More
