Our room overlooked the harbour so it was nice to have a sea view and watch the boats come in and out. It was quite spacious with comfortable beds and lots of storage space.tea, coffee and shortbread were constantly replenished. The staff were all lovely people and nothing was too much trouble. |The breakfasts were excellent with lots of choice... more

From our warm welcome on arrival to the day we left, we could not fault any aspect of our stay. Our room was clean and kept so by daily attention from the staff. The food in the restaurant was excellent. The staff were warm, friendly, courteous and helpful and helped to make our stay one of the best weeks we... more

The staff at the Ayre offered excellent and cheerful service from start to finish of a seven day stay there. The single room was sufficiently large and well cleaned every day. The restaurant offered an extensive menu of well cooked meals; many made with local produce. The variety was sufficient for something different every night. The only duplication was by... more

My wife and I arrived early and our room was not ready for us. The management held our luggage and we went for an extended walk around Kirkwall. By the time we had returned to the hotel, all of our luggage had been moved to our room. The staff was wonderful and the restaurant had a large selection of delicious... more

We stayed here after arriving on the Aberdeen to Kirkwall ferry. (note: it is a long walk from the ferry terminal to the hotel, especially at night!) The rooms are nice, relatively spacious and clean. The bed was somewhat soft but we still had a good sleep. Breakfast was good. Check in and check out were quick and efficient. The... more

I have never been a big fan of hotels in small scottish towns and generally only stay there on business. This place was better than i expected though not cheap. The food in the dining room was pretty poor: my local steak was smothered in a tasteless sauce. The best part was breakfast which I was delighted to see was... more

What a disappointment! After paying extra for "seaview rooms", my traveling companion and I were dismayed to find ourselves with really dated accommodations... worn, old wall-paper and carpet, stuffy rooms, cheap and coarse bedding package. The rooms were nothing like the picture in the Ayre Hotel on-line ad. The linens were actually weird... the bottom sheet (there was no top... more

We spent three nights at the Ayre Hotel. From the moment we arrived we were impressed with the personal service, cleanliness and warmth of the establishment. Kirkwall's independent restaurants are not famed as the gourmet centres of the universe, so we dined in the hotel's own restaurant and found the food fantastic and very reasonably priced - particularly the seafood.... more

2 nights in the Ayre, reception staff friendly and helpful. Evening meal and breakfast nice, again staff helpful and friendly. Unfortunately two very disturbed nights sleep due to the thin walls. You could hear everything from the rooms next door and above. Loud tvs, talking, toilets, and what sounded like bodies being dragged around! Would not recommend for anyone who... more
