We stayed in this hotel for seven nights as part of an organised tour which included breakfasts and evening meals at the hotel. Based on our experiences, we had no hesitation in booking the hotel for an even longer stay next year. Our room in the new wing was very clean and comfortable and had a good view over the... More

We were travelling with a group of ~24 adults and were scattered around the establishment. Some were in the new section and were quite pleased. We were in the back is what I presume was the original section. Unfortuantly, we were there for a Friday and Saturday night when the club next door was going great guns with the local... More

First impressions of the hotel are excellent and the ensuing stay was very satisfactory. We stayed in the new extension which was polished but bland and you could've been anywhere in the world. This is a minor quibble though but it could be rectified with some Orkney-centric art on the walls rather than the soulless, off-the-shelf, box canvasas. Be carefull... More

Check in was friendly and efficient. I had one of the rooms at the front of the hotel in the new wing with a view over the sea. Despite facing on to the road traffic noise was not a problem. Getting to the room from reception was not for the faint-hearted however - there were no fewer than 7 doors... More

Had a great stay at the Ayre Hotel on holiday. The hotel was busy with locals too which is always a good sign! The restaurant was fantastic and breakfast was also nice. The staff were very helpful and polite. Our room had a view of the sea which was excellent watching the boats coming and going.Lyall & Wendy (proprietors) were very welcoming... The rooms in the new annex are a bit pricey but well worth it; we stayed there twice during our Orkney trip and both times were delighted with the service and welcome, as well as the spotless noes rooms, which are designed but not over designed. Restaurant looked less fun. More

My friend and I had a twin bedded room in the old part of the hotel, the beds and bedding were lovely and the room was very clean and comfortable. We ate in the restaurant the first night as we'd arrived quite late and had a super meal. Breakfast the next morning was fabulous, loads of things to eat even... More

The new bedroom wing is a delight, comfortable and well designed. The older part of the hotel retains its character and blends well with the new wing. The food is superb with a wide choice of menu. The owner and his wife certainly know how to run a hotel. It is within easy walking distance of the town centre and... More

at £95 per night we expected something top notch, given that we are far from any major city. This hotel is modern but bland, the decor is dated and cheap. It ticks all the boxes but really is a 3*+ tourist hotel. Advertises wi-fi but t is not available in most rooms, you have to come downstairs to read your... More

This is my second visit to Kirkwall, and the second time I've stayed at the Ayre Hotel. Fluffy quilts, soft white sheets, good local beer, good food, close to the town centre - what more could you ask for? Free Wi-Fi - yup, they've got that too! More
