Good central location near the harbour, vey friendly welcome, pleasant, clean and decently kitted out room and excellent food make this my choice for Kirkwall. Some of the restaurant staff are a bit friendlier than others, but you never know who's having a bad day I guess. Special mention for the fish combo on the dinner menu, which excels in... More

We stayed here for two nights while visiting Kirkwall. The owners/staff were very gracious and accommodating and seemed genuinely happy to welcome us. We had a waterfront room so we could watch the every-changing seascape and the constant comings-goings of the ferry. Our room was quite large and the bed was exceedingly comfortable. The breakfasts (included in our rate) was... More

Stayed here as part of an archaeology tour and it couldn't have been a better base. The rooms in the main building have been renovated fairly recently and are nicely furnished, if rather small, as are the bathrooms. The food at dinner was excellent and the portions huge, while all the staff are very helpful and friendly. Some less positive... More

We stayed at this hotel as a package on the tour we were on so we didn't choose it. All very dated but they obviously try their best and no complaints about service and cleanliness. The food was very good with enormous portions of everything and the restaurant was packed out every night with locals as well as the residents.... More

The staff coudnt do enough to help .From the outside it looks run down but don't let this put you off and the owner said it is away to get done up,it will be... More

It's actually super charming; we arrived after booking very very last minute, and then we were late (never underestimate how slow you'll go when it's pitchblack on Orkney Island and you're afraid of driving into a ditch). They were a little confused where we were coming from, so that was a bit of a splash of cold water, but the... More

Well located within a short walking distance of main tourist sights of Kirkwall. The staff are helpful and friendly. The food preparation and dining room service was very good as was the buffet breakfast selection. Although not overly spacious, the rooms were very clean and comfortable. I would definitely recommend it.

I have just returned from a business trip to both Orkney and Shetland. I stayed at the Ayre and found the hotel very clean, and comfortable. The rooms are clean , and tidy, if not a little dated. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom ticked all the boxes. The in house wi-fi was neither use nor ornament, with... More

Just stayed here for 10 nights. It is now even better than when I stayed here last 5 years ago. Improved rooms, custom built extensions with 18 new bedrooms, and new breakfast/lunch/dining room also a refurbished existing dining room. Excellent management from Wendy & Lyall Harray. Good friendly efficient staff. Great welcoming atmosphere. Nothing is too much trouble!! Very good... More

we stayed here with our daughter and it was lovely, the travel cot provided was a bit tired looking but it done the job. we then came back after our son was born, they only had one highchair so trying to have lunch with a toddler and a young baby meant one of us had to hold one of our... More
