I've stayed in larger, supposedly 'better' hotels in North America that could learn a whole lot of lessons from the nice folks that run the Ayre. This hotel was one of the nicer hotels I've stayed in. I spent 5 days there while visiting on business. Room: - VERY clean. - VERY modern. Don't know how else to put it.... More

I stayed in the Ayre for two nights while in Orkney for work. The hotel is right at the waterfront in Kirkwall, close to the bus station and some lovely shops. The staff I met were friendly and very helpful. My room was in the new annexe, on the second floor, overlooking the harbour. It was a good size room,... More

Stayed here recently on a business trip. I experienced a couple of minor issues which the management rectified for me. Food in the hotel restaurant was good with good portion sizes. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Looking forward to a return visit in the spring.

Stayed here for two nights on a business trip to Orkney. My room was spacious, clean and modern. Eloquently decorated with tasteful modern oak furniture. I didn't have the best of views however I'm sure several rooms will have stunning views of the local landscape. Bathroom again was very modern with a very good rain shower. The food in the... More

Excellent hotel, rooms comfortable and clean I had a view over the water. The food was the best to be had in Kirkwall. Family run hotel, staff friendly and very helpful. We were on Orklney for five days and this was a great base to travel out each day to see this beautiful historic island

Booked into here for work - Bedrooms really clean and smart, superb shower. Bed very comfy and pillows spot on for me. Food was really well cooked and plentiful. On the day of departure we needed an early breakfast (over an hour before breakfast start time !!) we ordered a bacon butty the night before and it was freshly cooked... More

We stayed in Ayre Hotel for 2 nights in September on a quite trip to Orkney. The hotel was located right on the harbour front with great views. It was a good location as a base for touring round Orkney. The hotel itself was lovely, very modern and clean. The bed was huge and really comfortable with great pillows and... More

The Ayre Hotel has something of a split personality. Rooms are large and recently refurbished in the “modern hotel” tradition (purples, throws, stripes, canvas wall art etc.). All very clean and comfy and just what you’re looking for. The staff were really helpful and polite and tolerated our list of odd demands and requests with good grace. The communal areas... More
