Some friends and I needed a base for touring Orkney and the Ayre hotel in the Orkney travel brochure looked very nice and the price was reasonable. The hotel was indeed very welcoming and comfortable was was ideally placed for the inter-island ferries and for driving around. It was also just a short walk to Kirkwall's main shopping street and... This is the third time that I have stayed at the Ayre Hotel. Very convenient for walking around Kirkwall and for ferries. I booked a single room and had a king size bed - very comfortable. Large power shower. Lovely cooked breakfast and very friendly. No preblems with Wifi which is free. Previously I have raved abaout the meals but... More

My mother and I stayed here for 2 nights. Bedrooms spacious and bathrooms modern and clean. Breakfast menu more than adequate with friendly and professional staff. Would certainly stay here again.

This is my hotel of choice when travelling in and around the Orkney islands. Staff friendly and attentive. Rooms are immaculately clean, and as I discovered on my last visit the rooms have recently undergone refurbishment. Food is excellent as my ever expanding waistline will testify. Highly recommend the prawn and monkfish in chilli sauce starter... One of my favourites.

Stayed for one night on a friday in March. Good: Location - very central; parking - on site and plentiful; efficient check in; newly decorated room; free wifi. Could be better - room on small size for double bed; wifi slow.

This unprepossessing place provides a perfect base for visiting Kirkwall and the rest of the islands. The waterfront location is perfect for the ferries and nearby for the main drag, with its shops and restaurants. Tesco’s is five minutes away. There is ample parking either on the seafront side or in their own car park. We had a room in... More

We have just returned from a 2 night stay in this lovely hotel. We paid more for a superior room and were delighted as the room was spacious, newly decorated and had a large en-suite shower room. The room was cold but soon warmed up when we turned on the radiator. Breakfast was very disappointing - dried out, looked and... More

I visited Orkney on a business trip in the beginning of the year and I was booked into the Ayre for a whole week. The place was ok, the staff was nice, helpful and smiley. The room was also ok, a bit small but ok otherwise. The bathroom was disappointing, old fittings, quite small and the shower was a bit... More
