We stayed for three nights and while the room was OK and the staff friendly - this hotel is overpriced for the service it offers. We had to wait 40 minutes between courses at dinner, my choice of desert was not available on any evening, no marmalade at the dull breakfast offering, tea instead of the requested coffee delivered and... more

Extremely friendly family-run hotel in the quaint village of Hay-On-Wye. Amy and co. will cater to all your needs in this classically-furnished lodging, with the beautiful Brecon Beacons on your doorstep. Ideal for a relaxing getaway, good food and an uplifting atmosphere! more

We chose The Swan at Hay because it ticked a number of boxes for us, such as parking, central location, attractive gardens, good food write-ups. Owner manager Amy made us feel very welcome at our Friday evening check-in. Within minutes, she was also, impressively, looking after us in the dining room for our evening meal. It's a family-run business and... more

We have just spent a fantastic couple of days at the Swan, the welcome and the atmosphere throughout the whole of our stay could not have been better. The food was superb, as good as any London restaurant. The only slightly negative comment we could make was that the breakfast service for some people on the second day was a... more

We went back to The Swan after our lovely break at Easter. The welcome was as warm and friendly as ever and the room was clean, nicely decorated and spacious. Staff were helpful and professional and food in the bistro was first rate. This is our little oasis of calm amidst some breathtaking countryside and I'm already looking forward to... more

I stayed at The Swan for my brother's wedding and had a wonderful weekend. The reception was beautifully done, and all guests had a great time. The hotel was full of old world charm and the rooms were quite quirky. The food was the best food I've ever had at a function (and judging by how happy the guests were,... more

One of the pleasures of the Hay Festival in past years has been an enjoyable meal at the Swan Bistro. This year was a huge disappointment! Four members of our party ordered the 'Daube' at £14.25 per portion. After a lengthy wait the Daube arrived. It consisted of a very small portion of what appeared to be synthetic mashed potato... more

We stayed for 3 days. We paid £500 plus. This was our third stay at the Swan and will be the last. Positives - good cooked breakfast, helpful staff, good location. Negatives - bedroom shabby and uninviting, telephone did not work, chest of drawers without handles. Residents' lounge cold, souless and poorly furnished. Dinner quality -variable courses and main course... more

I've stayed here in the past and was happy at the prospect of returning. However, I doubt I'll go back again. The room was run-down - eg a broken radio, a saggy mattress, a hair-dryer that barely got warm (like the radiators), then in the bathroom cheap and nasty toiletries and the world's thinnest loo paper. I expected faded glory... more

A good location in a really lovely town, with adequate parking and excellent spacious and soundproofed rooms with all amenities. The management were friendly,if a little disorganised (for Fri dinner),but the Bistro worked well when the part time staff came on board. The bar was really dingy and unappitizing, and the Bistro rather souless, but the dining room and garden were super Unfortunately... more
