We stopped for lunch on a Saturday while travelling on the A34 had a super lunch. Great food good beers and excellent service. We were so impressed we stopped for lunch on our return journey on Sunday. Will consider overnighting here in their B & B. A good old fashioned pub.

Stopped here for 2 nights in room number 2 for a visit to newbury racecourse. A very friendly young girl took us to our room which looked lovely and clean but once in there were a few cobwebs in the bathroom and something all over the picture above the bed (not sure what it was) The kettle was nice and... We stayed for 2 nights in an annexe with a double bed, en suite, a kitchen area, and a seating area. It was very spacious and comfortable, and we would definately stay again, The staff were friendly, and the pub meal we had was quite nice...typical pub grub. The sandwiches at the bar were excellent, and great value. All in... More

We meet our friends here from The Cotswolds as we live in Sussex its about halfway. Usually we meet mid week but this time it was on a Sunday after a trip around Highclere Castle or Downton Abbey to ITV series fans. It was very busy but service at the bar and restaurant was prompt and efficient as ever. It... More

Met up with family for Sunday lunch, 4 adults 1 child and the dog! Very welcoming and attentive service Couldn't fault the food, generous portions of meat. Veg not overcooked and gravy served separately so you could have as much or little as wanted. We all opted for 2 courses, main and puddings.Spoilt for choice with puds but all delicious... More

We had the family room which was a double room, a bathroom, a kitchen area and a room on the other side of the kitchen was a room with two singles in. It's like a mini country cottage and very rustic including a few spiders and cobwebs to make you feel at home or on edge if you're a teenage... More

Had an evening meal here with a couple of dear friends, a month or so ago. The staff were friendly, helpful and amusing. The service was spot on and the food was excellent. All three of us were very impressed (which is praise indeed from three fussy old farts). Of particular interest to me was the in-depth knowledge of the... More

Decent Real Ales, typical old english country pub, but like much of England, it seems to have lost its way. I ordered a Ploughman's Lunch, which has always consisted of a cold meal consisting of cheese, chutney, and bread - meat may or may not be added. My Ploughman's at The Carpenter's Arms had no cheese, no chutney (instead there... More

We are sorry to hear that your Ploughman's was not to your liking, however we feel that we need to point out that our menu clearly gives a choice of "Cheese, homecooked ham, rare roast beef, pate or smoked salmon ploughmans" if a diner chooses a ploughmans and doesn't ask for cheese then correct me if I am wrong but...
