Stayed here for 4 nights in July 2015. Lovely big room and bathroom, and balcony with great sea views. Breakfast very good. John, the host, was very helpful and a great source of local information. An added bonus was the availability of snacks and drinks in the evening - not something you find very often in a B&B.

It was wet, most of the time -- although when the sun shone or the dusk fell the views were tremendous and the skyline beyond compare. The Castle by the Sea is also old, gloriously so, and in places still needing repair, a thankless and remorseless task. Do not go near the place if you need plastic and bling. This... More

Britain, the home of the B&B, the Bleach Haired Landlady of the previous Century, still has Towns that thrive on that History and Tradition..albeit no Bleach haired Landlady at The Castle, nostalgia reigns aplomb, but far more polished! We arrived after a last minute drive around North Yorkshire and googled a 'dog friendly' Hotel...TA came up first, with this place... More

Fabulous stay, what a find. John and Janet were so helpful and welcoming to us and our dog. A really interesting historic building which is being tastefully renovated and has wonderful views! Good quality breakfast, cooked to order, daily newspapers to read. Janet and John were so friendly and gave us advice on places to eat and visit with our... More

Our room had patio doors leading on to the roof terrace, so ideal for the dog. Conveniently situated nearby walks for the dog meant we were able to go out before breakfast. Breakfast was superb, fresh fruit salad and cereal, followed by a full-English cooked to order and partaken in the conservatory with wonderful sea views. This was our first... More

Not suitable for disabled. Pictures in trip advisor are dated as we were shocked to see the outside was very unkempt. Inside the rooms were dark and very dated. The conservatory was cramped and every thing felt sticky. The dinning area had a damp odour the chairs also felt sticky. Our room appeared clean but there was some underwear in... More

The hotel was very friendly and welcoming on arrival. The owners John and Janet were very helpful and friendly. The rooms were clean and tidy and provided tea/coffee making facilities. The location was great, far enough away from the hustle of the town but close enough to walk to. The views were fabulous from the roof top terrance. Would highly... More

There is no other b&b like it! The views, rooms and location are fabulous. The work of painter Atkinson Grimshaw is a feature throughout as he was resident here in late 1800s. The owners are working hard to restore this house and there is a way to go yet. Our room was large and comfortable. Breakfast cooked to order. Very... More

Booked the room by phone, and later found we could get away earlier. Called at hotel on the off chance to see if we could stay a night early. John jumped through hoops to help us. The room was comfortable the food was excellent and the view was to die for.

We booked the night before we traveled so booking accommodation was tough. This hotel is brilliantly situated with beautiful view of the sea. The bedroom and new en suit were fine, but the selling point of the hotel are the views, the fantastic staff and the location. The couple are extremely friendly and helpful!
