the best part of this hotel was the entrance,so first impressions were good,it has a grand stair case lots of history and elegance about it.Staff were helpful specially the manager david, food was good, bar prices a little exspensive.Room was also good u could upgrade but we found the prices to do that were expensive,be careful not to bump in to a... more

We chose the Royal as it was central . We arrived early but where allowed to leave our luggage till our room was ready. We booked through Super Break which made no mention of the car parking but after doing my own research for this hotel i found that there was a special rate for their customers at a secure... more

I admit I was rather put off by a lot of the reviews of this hotel, and not expecting much but I had a perfectly OK night at the Royal in a nice, clean, refurbished modern-hotel-style room. All the facilities were there, plenty of space and it was clean. I didn't use any of the other facilities (not even breakfast... more

Hi booked a weekend away at this hotel through travel zoo who offered two nights with bed and breakfast and evening meal and free room upgrade and champagne. i phoned up to book and was told that the hotel was almost fully booked and therefore we could only have a standard room, as it was, when we stayed there the... more

Disappointing room standards for a hotel of this stature. A two night stay, dinner, bed & breakfast priced at £135 per night per room is extremely high for a stay which placed me and my wife in a double room that had a shower that was unuseable due to very low water pressure, broken ventilator fan, bath surround in need... more

Although I can imagine it being a lovely hotel many years ago, with the grand staircase and period decor, this is getting very tatty and could do with a refurbishment, not necessarily to modernise it but to abolish the grotty-ness and cobwebs! The members off staff in the food and beverage areas, I found, were moderately friendly however the customer... more

Stayed at Royal to attend Fire Brigades Union conference from 12-15 May 2009. Had both breakfast and dinner here and the food was very good and interesting, pheasant was on the menu one evening. Breakfasts are self service buffet and the sausages and black pudding I would recommend. Staff efficient and friendly. I had a room on the second floor... more

i recently had a 3 night stay at this hotel, the meals were excellent, and for the most part the staff were very good. Perhaps the reception staff could be a little more welcoming. my room was overall very good, apart from a draughty window, and a missing wall mirror which left marks on the wall. overall perhaps a little... more

Apart from the grand staircase, we thought that the other public areas of the hotel looked a bit tatty and in need of updating, but lucklily our room had been recently redecorated and furnished and was spacious and clean. The bathroom was also large, we had plenty of clean towels. Breakfast was also pretty good if a bit hectic. Pool... more
