This was a simply awful experience. The staff were poor and unknowledgable, the food was less than average and the atmosphere was stifled. I went with a few friends, a couple had steaks, they came out over cooked and full of gristle, they told the waitress only to be told that other people that had had steaks thought they were... More

Remember this is classed as a Restaurant-with-rooms, as opposed to a 5-star hotel with good restaurant. The rooms are fine, with good beds, bedding etc even if the bathrooms are tiny. The bar/lounge is cozy, ie tight on the old space, but the highlight of the place is the dining room, which is very bright and airy, and tables are... More

We've been coming to Sidmouth for the last ten years to visit our relatives. For our last two visits (December and October) we stayed at the Salty Monk. Each time we've had excellent food and a very comfortable stay. The breakfast is first class - great scrambled egg. The owner is very welcoming. This is our fourth Sidmouth 'hotel' -... More

Excellent food, pleasant and attentive staff, and good location. Definitely somewhere worth staying - room was comfortable and well prepared, Spa bath a bonus. Probaly the best breakfast I have had for some years. Don't be put off by some negative reviews - take it from someone who spends a great deal of his life staying in small hotels -... More

We stayed here for 3 nights during the Sidmouth folk festival. Sidmouth seafront just a 30 min walk from the hotel (in the village of Sidford) which is handy if you want to be away from the noise but close enough to enjoy the town. The restaurant is light and airy and nicely decorated. We didn't have an evening meal... More

We fancied a couple of nights away and chose Sidmouth. Looked on the web and found The Salty Monk which looked something special. It was! Lovely comfortable room - clean and very pretty. The spa bath was an extra bonus after a day of exploring around. The breakfast was lovely and so much choice. All the little 'extra' touches made... More

I booked to stay at the Salty Monk because of the write up in The Good Food Guide. I was surprised at the prices quoted for a room and dinner but anticipated it would be worth it in light of the recommendation. The room was adequate but we found the notes to guests in the bathroom quite offensive. We found... More

We are sorry to learn that the guest did not enjoy their meal through this review as we always check during the meal that everything is to the guests taste, and unfortunately when asked they did not voice their concerns so we are now unable to do anything about it retrospectively. We actually gave the guests 2 glasses of Gremillet... More

Very much like a boutique hotel in its style - quirky design, with a relaxing atmosphere and spotless rooms. Little extras like home-made cookies in the room, and a spa bath (in the room we had) all help to make it more special. The owners are really friendly, nothing is too much trouble. Would recommend eating in the restaurant, the... More
