At first sight we thought we'd boobed. The entrance isn't great. The reception seems to be a cupboard under the stairs. The carpet is far too busy. And there were electric zimmer frames in the hallway! What had we done! Of course Sidmouth is that sort of place. We're in our fifties and feel young here. However we've been every... more

We stayed for only one night bed and breakfast during a trip to the south coast of England. We had a sea view and our room was pleasant and airy. The bathroom was recently updated and attractive. However, although the service ticked all the boxes we did feel as though we had travelled back in time, with that terribly English... more

We stayed for 4 nights in the middle of August. If you want a complete rest, with outstanding service, food and surroundings then choose this hotel.Good age range( even a teenager ( who almost did not make it to breakfast!)..........outstanding food...nothing too much trouble.Would we go again? A resounding yes.....definitely worth the five hour journey more

Yes, it's pretty pricey, but this is the quintessential English seaside hotel. It is a fairly simple model evolved almost to perfection. The a la carte breakfast is cooked fresh and served at your table, not scraped of a sagging buffet. It's a place where people will speak of "luncheon" without apparent irony. It is, as others have said, clean... more

From the first moment we arrived to the minute we sadly waved goodbye, we were made to feel welcome and pampered. Nothing was too much trouble and, even though we have stayed in fine hotels all over the world, it would be difficult to remember a better trained staff. We had booked in for dinner, bed & breakfast and were... more

What a wonderful stay at the Riviera. It is a great experience, with such friendly and welcoming staff. Particular mention should go to Thomas for a lovely, friendly welcome, and to Michael for looking after us so well in the evening. You truly get excellent, friendly, old fashioned and courteous service from the first minute of your stay when your... more

I have stayed at the Hotel Riviera many times and have always found it to be excellent in every area, the staff, management, food, rooms are all first class and as the hotel is family owned, there is strong evidence of the personal touch - nothing is too much trouble. The position of the hotel is perfect - just across... more

I must agree with the other reviews that this hotel is very expensive, although a perfectly pleasant place to stay the price is extortionate. We had a twin seaview room that was ok but a bit on the small side with an old fashioned black tv, but the bathroom was very nice and looked like it had recently been refurbished.... more

We booked a 2 night (Friday & Saturday) break during a cold and windy January. Our room was a sea-view room with a super bay window overlooking the gentle curve of the beach. It was well equipped, clean, and spacious with an en-suite bathroom My wife and I are both in our late forties, and we were almost the youngest... more

What an extortionate price for only a very average hotel. It is more like an old people's home - the so called suites are not suites at all - food is nice but nothing special - maybe I am thirty years too young for this place..(and I am late 40's!!) more
