This is budget accommodation and to judge it against any other criterion is misconceived. My room was tiny but it served it's purpose and was both clean and quiet. Mine host was helpful and friendly and went to the trouble of opening the kitchen to feed me on a Sunday night. I would stay there again.

My husband and i were guests at a wedding reception there recently, the whole experience was a good one, the room we stayed in was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was nice and hot and tasty, not sure about the peppered mushrooms though. Thanks for a lovely stay.

I did my CPC there and the food we had was very stale and dry, the Sandwiches were all dry and curled up, I felt they were made far to early and left to dry out too much so the food is not recommended at all, the manager was very defensive .... what has happened to the customer is always... More

I booked the venue to run a seminar having also help my son's Christening lunch and our office Christmas party there. As always the staff are very polite and friendly and will do anything within their power to help you. My delegates all enjoyed the morning and lunch and ate heartily before going on their ways. Good venue and good... More

Location was good - within walking distance of town centre and railway station. I stayed here for one night in July before going to my daughter's wedding near Newcastle-upon-Tyne (I wanted to break my journey as I was travelling from Romania) and then for a few nights after her wedding. The double room I had for the 1st night was... More

Whilst travelling on a theatre tour I was booked to stay at The Shakespeare. Touring and performing can be tiring and a mixed hotel bag so to speak. Indeed the eccentricity of the UK is something to be embraced and on the hotel front you take the luxurious alongside faded country glamour to chintzy through to soulless budget chain efficiency.... We were a bit dubious having read the reviews on TA. But our room, a little small for 3, which was our company's fault, was very good. Bathroom amenities were excellent, 3 blokes sharing it had to be! rooms clean and tidy. Staff friendly and helpful. Honestly! Would stay again! Oh and free wifi!

Room was clean & tidy if a little on the small side. Like a previous review about the diy. Free WiFi Very close to the main road and about 5 minutes from the town . By arriving early you get a good parking space but do get blocked in .

OK so the Shakespeare isn't very modern, or in the best state of repair. In fact it's a bit of a DIY bodgers nightmare. Whoever is doing the maintenance seems to have plenty of enthusiasm but little skill. But it's clean (if somewhat worn), the water is hot, the beds are comfortable, the staff are very helpful, and the food... More
