Good location with free parking. Reasonable value for money at £30 a head with breakfast however the breakfast was kiddy portion size. It's an old building but everything is grubby including the cutlery, crockery, bathrooms etc. could do with a good clean to transform it from shabby hostel to quaint olde inn.

Nice location next to the river, 16th Century Tudor building, has character but in need of some TLC. Rooms were clean, bar was ok but not fully stocked. Staff were pleasant & the breakfast was freshly cooked to order & satisfactory. £69 for a triple room.

Booked a single room with en suite. Room was very compact but sufficient for my one night stay. TV in room and tea and coffee making facilities. Good level of cleanliness. Friendly staff. Very handy for the Mercury theatre and Colchester Art's centre. Only downside was my inability to get hot water out of the shower until the morning.

It is fair to say that I did not expect more than a clean room and this hotel is clean but we won't be back even though we will need to go back to Colchester in the near future. We checked in and were told Sunday breakfast was from 7.30 to 9.30. However, the next morning found the dining room... More

For £55 a night B&B in a tudor building I was expecting old and creaky but not from the mattress! The springs could be felt through the sheets and every slight move made the bed groan. Mat black tiles in a tiny en suit with no window just made it ferl like showering in a cupboard. When arriving I thought... More

Having read a number of the reviews and having stayed there on 6 September I cannot understand why people are complaining. The hotel is exactly what you expect for the money and abit more. The no reception thing with a phone instead was weird but we were accommodated early for a wedding and had two rooms clean and waiting. We... More

I originally published this review a while ago, but see it has been deleted, so reposting it: I booked the hotel before reading any reviews, but panicked after seeing this site. However when I checked in, I was initially relieved by the decor. The room had been basically cleaned, but I was left itchy and with a rash after using... More

We stayed here to travel to and from the 2014 V Festival, we booked because we wanted a family room as there were three adults and they offered a family room and the Chelmsford Travelodge was really expensive. First impressions were better than we expected however first impressions can be deceiving. There was a strange smell in the room which... More

Terrible place, which is such a shame is it is a beautiful old building which deserves some love and attention. Don't think the decor (or the linen) has been touched since the 80's. Upon arrival you can get into the building via a door marked Reception, but you will not be able to get into Reception as it is permanently... More

I stayed at this hotel on a business trip and luckily it was all paid for by my company (I would not have been impressed if I'd paid for it myself). The room was dirty with cobwebs behind the bed, the windows are single glazed so very noisy and to top that off the window didn't close fully. The service... More
