Don't be put off by first appearances. The hotel is a mishmash of numerous buildings, with the main reception and bar housed in the oldest part of the building. The reception staff are very friendly and welcoming. My rooms was clearly recently refurbished, with plenty of space, modern bathroom and nice and warm. We ate in the bar and the... More

We had our wedding here and could not find any fault with this lovely historic hotel, the room was clean and warm (we had one of the four poster rooms) nothing was too much trouble for the lovely staff, they were always smiling and friendly and the food was fantastic! If you want to have a romantic wedding in an... More

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we cannot fault our experience of this hotel. The staff were always helpful & friendly, the room was excellent being large and clean with everything we expected of an old coaching inn. The food was fantastic, served by attentive waitresses & waiters with smiles on their faces. Would thoroughly recommend... More

Based on internet photos I booked two rooms in the older section of the hotel and was not disappointed. The low ceilings, exposed beams, and tilting floor might not be everyone’s idea of great hotel ambiance, but we loved it. (For those not charmed by such historic surroundings, there is a new wing with more contemporary rooms available.) We stayed... More

A quirky half timbered hotel, a short walk from the main town centre with lots of historic character, although most of the rooms are in modern extensions. Good beers in the bar and the evening meal of fish and chips was excellent. Unfortunately the room was slightly damp with an interesting odour and could have benefitted from a re- fresh.... More

despite the very old surroundings, this place is not pretentious. Excellent location and careful to consider its hotel guests whilst office Christmas parties were taking up a large part of the public areas. So service very good, facilities (I guess this is what keeps the price down) a little old-fashioned: The "executive" room was small with slightly cramped showerroom. The... More

Sat nav took me straight to the hotel, very clean with friendly staff, was a party on in the function room, but never really heard much noise from it, good breakfast, a little walk into town and plenty of places to eat/drink. Think I'll stay again in the New Year

Very cozy, clean and friendly staff. Nice breakfast options. At first i couldn't find the entrance, because is the entrance to the pub. The staff was very nice, helped me with my luggage. There are only 2 levels, no elevator.

My husband booked one night and asked for a room in the older part of the hotel, knowing that I am a history freak. What a wonderful stay it was too, I was transported! The first impression was wow, great character with old original beams and huge fireplaces. Reception welcome was excellent with both staff very helpful and smiling. Up... More

After reading favourable reviews decided to book an executive room in the new block as only request was for a warm room, after arriving found room had been changed to above pub , was old and very cold, after explaining how room was not executive or warm was given my original choice. Room was very warm, able to control perfectly,... More
