been a visitor of the hotel for years, not to stay, but lunch, as it has always been the only decent place to eat in colchester, oh dear what has happened? had cream tea yesterday, dreadful, the waitress was very apologetic, and took away the offending scone, however the second one was a stale as the first, by then id... We have been visting this hotel for many years and stayed over a few times. We usualy go to the bar and eat. At one time the hotel and its visitors seemed to be quite sophisticated but it does seem to be a bit of a concourse nowdays for all and sundry. The fire is rarely lit in the lounge... More

We stayed here a few days ago and found although an old place there was plenty of character. Staff were friendly, although very busy. Room was dated and on the small side, although the bathroom looked nearly new but the actual bedroom could have done with a bit more tlc. Especially the linen, which was frayed - needs throwing away... More

Had a lovely nights stay at this hotel over the xmas holidays with friends. Very old and creaky with the older parts of the existing hotel going back to the 15th centry. We were in the front (old part) of the hotel so lots of road noise but the quirky charm of uneven floors etc made up for that. Fabulous... More

Oh please, how is this place expected to entertain our international guests. The bar has the opportunity to be beautiful, instead the old sofa's smell of unwashed hair. The menu's look like they have been used to wipe food off the floor. The rest rooms are dirty and need maintanence. The Hotel Inspector really should pay this one a visit! More

Having lived in Colchester until last year and eaten at the George on many occasions and enjoyed it we decided to stay there for a night as we had business in Suffolk at the weekend. What a mistake. The receptionist was not warm and welcoming, we were not offered a newspaper, warned that if we went out and came back... More

Booked this hotel for a business meeting as well as an overnight stay. Accommodation for both the meeting and hotel room was clean, tidy and suitable for the purpose. Little diappointed with the lunch provided for the meeting as there was very little of it but what was provided again was fresh and well prepared. Only real negative was the... More

We booked this hotel for the location. My hubby was attracted by the old building and lovely outside photo. However, it was a great disappointment. 1. Checked in - obviously we had a lot of luggage. No offer of help from the receptionist. We asked where a local restaurant was that we booked on-line. He just said he didn't know... More
