The hotel is conveniently situated in the town with many shops, restaurants, etc., within walking distance. We had an executive room at the back of the hotel with a comfortable super-king bed. Smallish room but with all the amenities you wish for except air conditioning. It was very, very hot and the small overhead fan just did not cool enough... More

Hi there I dont usually do these things and feel bad as otherwise this is clearly a lovely place to eat with well cooked good food. However I had a bug in my wilted spinach was totally unacceptable, and an all time first for me at any restaurant. The fact that when you replaced the dish there was then another... More

We stayed here for one night during a mini tour of Essex/Kent and East Sussex. We'd been to Beth Chatto's garden at Elmstead Market and wanted somewhere to stay not too far away. The staff were welcoming, our king-size room was absolutely fine, not small as some reviewers have said. The bathroom was very clean, a good size, and had... More

Great location. Very friendly and helpful staff. Overall the atmosphere with the decor was clean and bright for an old building. Room was small but very clean and had everything we needed. A little hot in the room but there was an electric fan. Breakfast very nice.

The hotel is very well located, clean and picturesque, well preserved old fashion interiors. The main problems was that the morning shift manager was very rude and impolite, I think she felt uncomfortable by the fact I was not English. It seems that this hotel specialize in local tourism. The room I was assigned to could not receive wifi signal.

I walked in off the street for a night. Small single room at the front of the hotel was very hot and noisy. Room was clean and well presented. Staff are very welcoming and professional. Breakfast was VG, with a superb eggs benedict option, which I recommend. Easy walk to the centre and station. Pretty good for a taxi driver... More

Very basic b&b. Our room was tiny - hardly enough room to move around the bed. Cheap and nasty furnishings. Grouting in shower discoloured. On a very noisy road - traffic and drunk people kept us awake during the night. Cooked breakfast good but hardly any butter on table and had to ask for ketchup and brown sauce - minuscule... More

Stayed four nights at The North Hill Hotel. Location is perfect with walking distance to the center, the castle park and the station. Colchester is a pleasant city to walk in, with pedestrian streets, shops, restaurants and pubs. If you want to go to London, trains run frequently and it takes about 50 minutes to Liverpool Street Station. The room... More

If Carlsberg did hotels it would be the north hill hotel, friendly helpful staff and a great location. Our room was small but clean and very comfortable, breakfast was really good with lots of choices. Being near the town centre it was within easy reach of all amminities. Overall a fantastic break.

The staff were very courteous, efficient, and approachable. The room (one of the Executive Doubles) was comfortable. The only reason I haven't given a 5-star review was because the bathroom seems to be a modern art installation on the themes of "eccentricity" and "bafflement". It took a long time to work out the trick for draining the basin and bath... More
