We stayed at the family run Österreichischerhof Hotel in Bad Hofgastein for a week in July, and can recommend the hotel. We supposedly had a small room but it was easily large enough and was bright and modern. It did lack a balcony but there are other rooms which have them. The majority of the guests were Austrian, but most of the staff could speak good English (especially in reception) and were very friendly. Our only complaint was that dinner was served very early – 7.30pm was the latest, but you really had to be there before 7.00pm. Food was traditional but good and we never felt hungry afterwards! The hotel is in a very central location within the very pleasant town, with many marked paths for walking or biking in easy reach. A real bonus with this hotel is that we got free entry into the thermal spa (Alpen Therme). There is a very convenient underground walk-way to the spa and entry is gained using an electronic wristband.
