This beautiful island is set in turquoise seas perfect for anyone learning to dive. The lodge is basic back packers in little stilted chalets. Be warned this is an island so running water and electricity are only available when the sun goes down. The food is plentiful and tasty but basic. The dive guides are superb and the diving is... My exceptional experience at Mari Mari Backpackers Lodge is the reason I have finally decided to create a tripadvisor account. From the moment I was picked up in Kota Kinabalu, to being returned I was in good hands, and received exactly what I had expected (if not more). The guides that joined us on the bus provided all necessary information... More

Diving - The diving is run from a platform about 200m off the smaller island (Mantanani Kecil) which is a very short boat ride from the Mari Mari Backpacker Lodge on Mantanani Besar. The divemasters managed our expectations by saying that we should not expect to see fish of any size as the village on the island fish the area.... More

My five friends and I stayed at mantanani backpacker lodge for five nights in two primitive but very charming "sulaps". We spent our days sun bathing at the fantastic beach just outside our lodges. Outside the resort the beach was clean from garbage, when walking closer to the two villages on the island there was a lot more garbage. One... More

By all means, this Mantanani Island is an untouched island where you can enjoy the sun, watersports (snorkling, diving), and sunset. The waters are crystal clear with a hue of aqua. I stayed at the dorm where we shared with a few girls. The downside is there were bugs on my pillow and the beds weren't comfy. The bbq dinner... More

I felt very at home here as I'm comfortable with the 'roughing it' type of holiday. It was much like my childhood holidays back home in New Zealand. Things were clean and tidy and the locals are very welcoming and friendly, even to guests who are not familiar with 'island life'. Unfortunately I must agree with the reviewer who mentioned... More

You can't miss Pulau Mantanani. It is completely spectacular, but this hostel/hotel is not. There was one other accommodation that I saw on the island called Holiday dream or Dream Holiday, but it is apparent that this business runs a sort of monopoly. My biggest problem with my stay was the customer service/staff. Unfortunately we ran into a lot of... More

We thought Mantanani Island would be a fishing and diving paradise as it was far enough away from the mainland of Borneo to have escaped the worst effects of man. However we dived twice, saw some nice corals but not many fish and whilst diving we heard and felt Dynamite being used for fishing, 3 times! This is a shot... More

The Mantanani is a good place for vacation. The sea water is crystal clear. At the long and white beach, you can see several people or nobody. There are a lot of crabs at the beach. The sunset is beautiful. We stayed there for three days. Most of the time, we sit in the pavilions and did nothing. I enjoyed... More

We loved this place! Really peaceful and relaxing. I thought the huts were great! There is a hammock under each one plus there are wooden day beds on the beach, which were also lit of a night time. The staff do keep the area clean but it is sad to see the rubbish away from the lodge. The food was... More
