There road is difficult. 14km of an E road and our car was not 4x4. Worth the drive. You feel you are off the beaten track. We camped and had the privilege of spotting northern lights. Great hiking nearby. Would definitely recommend

14 km north of the ring road in Vik. Must have "F" road rated vehicle. 14 km of driving on another planet! Really, really cool terrain. Campground stunning. We stayed in a cabin, which was ideal, since it rains a little most days in iceland. Very helpful onsite staff. Took an awesome 7 mile hike to the nearby glacier: You... More

Having seen some last minutes photos of Thakgil, we decided to spend a day there and were totally delighted with this hidden gem. The road to the campsite from the highway is more suited for 4x4 drives but the sights are stunning on the way. It is located amidst the valley and has a lovely cave to have meals in.... More

This place is breathtaking. My hubby and I just fell in love with this place. Inspite of getting there and it was pouring rain, we managed to set up our tent without getting drenched. The next day, the weather cooperated and we were able to hike up the magnificent mountain. It was just gorgeous. Every turn and over the hills,... More

The other positive reviews are spot on. This is the most beautiful campsite I have even seen. The hiking was challenging but worth it. When the hike description says up and over, look around you and be sure you know what you are getting into.

Thakgil is one of the most special places where we have spent the night during our trip to Iceland. The views from the road that brings you here are unforgettable and when you finally arrive you cannot believe that a camping can have such an idyllic location. There is a cave where you can grill your food (coal and oil... More

It took about an hour to drive into this place from the main road. In a standard 2WD rental with no extra insurances taken out, it was incredibly nerve-wracking as the road can get really rough, with a lot of elevation changes, blind hills, and curves. As my guide book said it only took 30 mins to get to, I... More

I loved þakgil campsite! Full shower, toilets. They also had small huts you could stay if camping isn't your thing! Its fairly easy to find!! I was so excited on my way there, the scenery was fantastic! And there are three hiking routes when you arrive! It had the best views!!!! I wish I stayed longer :) Tent was easy... More

The drive from the main highway is great and then you get to a beautiful and serene valley. We went with the cabin option for 4 people and the price was worth it. There are a few hiking options out of the valley ranging from easy to hard - depending on your preference. A bit rustic but staying at Thakgil... More

We stayed at Thakgil in july 2014, and we absolutely love it. The sight is incredible. I can't say aniyhing about the hiking around cause we've juste stay there one night, but the journey from the road 1 by car is absolutly amazing.
