The drive from the main highway is great and then you get to a beautiful and serene valley. We went with the cabin option for 4 people and the price was worth it. There are a few hiking options out of the valley ranging from easy to hard - depending on your preference. A bit rustic but staying at Thakgil... More

We stayed at Thakgil in july 2014, and we absolutely love it. The sight is incredible. I can't say aniyhing about the hiking around cause we've juste stay there one night, but the journey from the road 1 by car is absolutly amazing.

This place alone was worth coming to Iceland for. I wish I could stay a week - it's the most magical and stunning campsite I've ever been to. A unique location in a green flat valley surrounded by mountains, with a stream passing through. We stayed in a tent, and waking up to that stunning view was priceless. There is... More

This is one of the most stunning campsites i've been to in my life. Takes you 45 minutes on the gravel/dirt road to get there but the drive is well worth it! Hiking in the area is well recommended! The cave to have a BBQ is great!

The trip to the location takes half an hour from the main road. The location is nice. A cottage costs 20000 kr. Linen is not included, although the tourist office claims it is included. Costs 1300 kr per person. The cottage has two big beds. And not four single beds as the tourist office claims. The private bathroom consists of... More

This campground has a gorgeous location, beautiful lodgings, and gracious hosts. The location was truly stunning. The "dining room" is a beautiful cave lit by candlelight. We stayed in a cabin, which was small, neat, and very comfortable. Silverware, plates, etc. all included, as is a stove and a heater. Really loved our stay there.

Thakgil is, plainly, unmissable, and was the highlight of our trip, which took us all the way around Iceland. We arrived here on a rainy August night and were bowled over by the breathtaking beauty of the location, in a green valley between even greener mountains. We were originally going to camp for one night, but ended up staying two,... More

We camped here and it was one of our favourite remote locations.. So beautiful and so different!! The road is terrible to get here especially in a small car but once ye arrive it's all become worth it. Great views on the drive also and good hiking.

Thakgil was, needless to say, a highlight of a two-week Iceland trip. I regret that we didn't rent our cabin for more than one night, but we just had no idea how special it was from the reviews we had read, which were good, but which did not capture the grandeur of the site. Like everyone else, we thought we... More

First off, thanks to reviewer SaltyHoney below... I DEFINITELY thought I was lost (I can see the headlines now: stupid tourists take tiny car offroading, get lost in the midutdle of nowhere, and dies) but their review made my realize I probably WAS on the right track. Of all the campsites I stayed at while in Iceland (quite a few)... More
