First of all, I'm not exaggerating when I say this might be one of the best, if not the best hostel I've ever stayed in. Location is perfect, walking distance from everything, looking at the seacoast. It has an awesome bar with a really international crowd. Local beers on tap will sooth your mind after a day of sightseeing, or... More

Kex is an essential Reykjavik experience. It has great food, good accommodation and most importantly a profound place in Reykjavik's music scene. Often hosting bands such as Mammut and Samaris on Wednesday evenings, among many other musical attractions. It also happened to be one of the best hostels I stayed at while in Iceland, it is surprising that bedsheets are... More

We stayed in Kex for a week in mid-July 2014. It was a great base from which to take tours around the country. We met so many lovely people from all over the world, Kex has a very sociable atmosphere in the kitchens (one per floor) although the bar downstairs is catered towards those not staying in the hostel. Not... More

I'd stayed at Kex Hostel with friends on a previous trip to Iceland, so it was a simple plan to repeat the experience when I had nagged another set to go with me again. We normally opt for slightly more upmarket options on our trips overseas, but following my testimonial, my friends agreed that Kex would make a great base... More

We stayed at Kex during our visit and it could not have been better! The atmosphere was great, with good food, music, and bar scene, and the staff was amazingly helpful! We had some issues with some our plans (got caught in a storm and needed to push everything back a day) and the staff was more than happy to... More

Everything you need is here. The staff works hard in keeping the place clean. The front desk area has books and brochures and they will book all your trips. Pick up is right outside the door. Bonus supermarket right up the street. Breakfast is good and they have local bands play most nights. The outdoor patio does get loud late... More

Every corner of this hostel is a visual treat. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the dorms were clean and sufficiently spacious. I really recommend lunch at Kex too - both the burger and the pulled pork & cabbage dish were delicious!

I went for some nights in this hostel: the building is an old cookies factory. It's very big. The bar/restaurant is beautiful and good, it's impossible stay here without drink a good pint of viking! Rooms are clean. a Little bit noise. Staff super!

Some of the staff were pleasant. Maybe these employees aren't paid and stay and eat in exchange for their terrible customer service. Wifi goes down a lot. A lot of foreigners working at the hostel who don't seem to care about the guest's experience. It's like they're 'too cool to care.' Washrooms are dirtier than a lot of public toilets... More

Kex hostel has everything any traveller would want. You know that they have thought it through properly when they give out free ear plugs! We were booked into a 16 bed dorm for £12 a night. Sounds expensive for such a big dorm but thats Iceland. I loved this place. Whether I am chilling with a book in the quirky... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
It' s the Icelandic word for "biscuit" and a social hostel in Reykjavik. What's not to love? Housed in an old biscuit factory in the heart of Reykjavik, KEX is just steps from all the bars, clubs, and music venues that give this city its legendary reputation. It's also a painless distance from late night munchies and a mind-boggling array of coffee houses, shops, and tourist attractions. Of course, you might not even want to venture outside of the hostel with all its features: a cafe and bar, lounge area, heated outdoor patio, tourist information desk, laundry room, small fitness centre, and free Wi-Fi. Two guest kitchenettes and private laundry facilities are also available. And with a variety of rooms for up to 138 guests, you'll have no problem meeting interesting, new travel buddies from exotic places. KEX oozes with personality and soul-just like our guests. Every piece of decor has a story to tell. Using salvaged materials and found objects from various sources, KEX is an organic concept blending Iceland' s past with a modern, international twist. The raw industrial spaces and vintage furnishings combine to give it a homey, eclectic feel. With the affordable nightly rates, you'll still have enough cash left over to enjoy a few pints of Viking beer or sample some local delicacies like hakarl and Brennivin. In addition to our dormitory rooms we offer three different double rooms: 1. Double Plus - 1 double bed, 1 private bathroom, linens and towels, and 1 fantastic seaside view. 2. Double Standard - 1 double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels, and if you are lucky the same fantastic view. 3. Twin - 2 single beds, linens and towels, and a better than average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed. LOCATION: KEX is located in the centre of Reykjavik, with a view across the sea to Mt. Esja across the bay. The old factory that houses KEX is also home to The Living Art Museum and studios of various artists, dancers, and fashion designers. KEX is within an easy walking distance to the city's interesting nightlife, restaurants, shopping streets, cultural attractions, and other points of interest in the city centre. To reach those places a little further afield, the hostel is well connected to the city's public bus system. ... more   less
