The accommodation is pretty basic, and the bathrooms are unpleasant. It's very expensive for what you get. The bar is a hipster's dream though. Maybe just call in for a pint and sleep somewhere else...

KEX works for one very specific scenario: if you are traveling alone or the primary purpose of your trip is to meet other travelers. If you are just looking for a nice place to stay, this is not the place. It's very overpriced, and while it's not a terrible property there are so many better options in Reykjavik on Airbnb.... More

The rooms were quiet enough at night, modern keys, good blinds (they are very important in the summer), the toilets and shower were very clean and modern, nice atmosphere in the bar, concerts happening as well.

The first challenge that came to mind when I walked up the steps of this place was, are these Abbot or Silver Lake hipsters? Irrelevant. There are a number of beers on tap and there's a setup for live music. The place is clean and has an open floor plan. I came here in the day and it was pretty... More

KEX staff is great. No question about it. They helped us a lot before coming to Reykjavik (gave advice, booked transport from the airport, helped us with Blue Lagoon). Then, there was no problem with the check-in at 1 am. And there were still people in the common room. Great breakfasts - porridge with great jam (3 kinds), warm and... More

This is a phenomenal hostel. Huge communal space with a trendy hipster style bar area always buzzing with life. The restaurant serves up one of the best burgers in town and the bar has an affordable happy hour. I stayed here twice… once in a 16 bed mixed dorm… which was loud and a little crazy, but to be expected... More

It is a nice hostel, don't get me wrong, but there are much better ones in the area. The bunk beds I was in squeaked loudly every single time I moved and I felt awful for the other people in the room. There also isn't an elevator and carrying a huge suitcase up five flights of stairs alone was terrible,... More

This is my first visit to Iceland so can't compare it to other hostel facilities in the country. The lobby and bar are trendy and hip. Rooms are pretty worn down - we had a hole in our roof and many ants. Also showers are less than stellar - the guys were communal, which having traveled around the world, I... More

When I first walked in I thought Kex would be my best hostel experience yet. It is beautifully decorated. It's clean and the kitchens and bedrooms are fine. Our room was on the main floor, which is shared with a bar/restaurant. Why on earth they would do this, I have no idea. Could not sleep at all with the sound... More

Nice place, lively and very well located. Lacks an elevator and decent showers, though. There are often shows in the lobby, and the bar/restaurant is fine and not very pricy. Very trendy place on Reykjavik, even the locals come there to hangout.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
It' s the Icelandic word for "biscuit" and a social hostel in Reykjavik. What's not to love? Housed in an old biscuit factory in the heart of Reykjavik, KEX is just steps from all the bars, clubs, and music venues that give this city its legendary reputation. It's also a painless distance from late night munchies and a mind-boggling array of coffee houses, shops, and tourist attractions. Of course, you might not even want to venture outside of the hostel with all its features: a cafe and bar, lounge area, heated outdoor patio, tourist information desk, laundry room, small fitness centre, and free Wi-Fi. Two guest kitchenettes and private laundry facilities are also available. And with a variety of rooms for up to 138 guests, you'll have no problem meeting interesting, new travel buddies from exotic places. KEX oozes with personality and soul-just like our guests. Every piece of decor has a story to tell. Using salvaged materials and found objects from various sources, KEX is an organic concept blending Iceland' s past with a modern, international twist. The raw industrial spaces and vintage furnishings combine to give it a homey, eclectic feel. With the affordable nightly rates, you'll still have enough cash left over to enjoy a few pints of Viking beer or sample some local delicacies like hakarl and Brennivin. In addition to our dormitory rooms we offer three different double rooms: 1. Double Plus - 1 double bed, 1 private bathroom, linens and towels, and 1 fantastic seaside view. 2. Double Standard - 1 double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels, and if you are lucky the same fantastic view. 3. Twin - 2 single beds, linens and towels, and a better than average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed. LOCATION: KEX is located in the centre of Reykjavik, with a view across the sea to Mt. Esja across the bay. The old factory that houses KEX is also home to The Living Art Museum and studios of various artists, dancers, and fashion designers. KEX is within an easy walking distance to the city's interesting nightlife, restaurants, shopping streets, cultural attractions, and other points of interest in the city centre. To reach those places a little further afield, the hostel is well connected to the city's public bus system. ... more   less
