If King Minos, was still alive, would prefer to make their holidays in Myrtos and reside in the Big Blue! We spent a week at Big Blue and greatly enjoyed our time there. Its location on the edge of the village made it a quiet and restful place to stay, but numerous good restaurants were only 2-5 minutes walk away.

Spotlessly clean rooms with balcony having wonderful views over the Libyan Sea. Staff are warm, friendly and very welcoming; the owner even parked our car for us. breakfast on the flowery terrace was very good. The hotel is only a few minutes walk from the beach, although it is quite steep. very quiet and peaceful location.

We are always very happy to stay at the Big Blue. A warm and friendly from the owners, Anastasia and Pavlos. They make this unique place a special moment where you feel like home. The hotel overlooks the charming and typical Cretan village of Myrtos with breathtaking and magnificent views of the Libyan Sea. A place where it is good... More

We spent a week at Big Blue and greatly enjoyed our time there. Its location on the edge of the village made it a quiet and restful place to stay, but numerous good restaurants were only 2-5 minutes walk away. Car parking was convenient. Good hot water pressure (solar), although the shower curtain could use replacing. Big balcony overlooking the sea, 180 degree view from the studio room. Bed rather firm, the room is large and the kitchen quite adequate. It had a filter coffee maker, but we would have preferred a kettle. The place offers free wifi, but it was too weak from... More

We stayed as a family of 4 in July 2011. Room(s) - two rooms joined together to give a simple, clean family space. Large balcony, with simply stunning views over the bay. This had enough shade options that we could enjoy it in the morning, lunch-time and night. Air conditioning was sufficient to keep even newly arrived Scots cool enough... More

I too stayed at Big Blue last year, and I was there when the owner billed my party for a balance of €30 as we checked out. After we had paid and left, he charged another €90 to our credit card, and he did not tell us he was going to. He claims he told us, but why would he?... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
big BLUE awarded every year by Eco- Label GREEN KEY.The big BLUE stands in the west end of Myrtos village, towards a long sandy beach which spreads until the end of the local road and splits into isolated little bays. The beautiful village of Myrtos lies around a small bay of south Crete, in front of the Mediterranean Sea.A green valley covered with orange, lemon, olive and banana trees spreads to the east and, together with the location of the village up to the 35th parallel of latitude, contributed to the temperate climate of Myrtos, bearing a very mild winter of average temperature 12o C and the cool summer 30o C.This might be the reason that Myrtos is the only one place of the Mediterranean where swallows remain and settle during winter.Extended archaeological excavations uncovered two archaic settlements near Myrtos. In the west of the village is also situated a Roman bath, of which one may recognize remains of walls and colonnades spread around the big BLUE and the nearby beach. In the exceptional village of south Crete, which preserves and keeps alive the features and traditions of the Cretan folklore life, we created a very special touristic unit. In our unit each studio has its own uniqueness.Blue and white are the main colours. "Ocean", "Naytilous", "Breeze" are some of the name of our studios. However, if one stands to one of the wide verandas and looks in front, he realizes that the name big BLUE means the big blue of the sea in the extend of the horizon. The big BLUE consists of six studios, two apartments and two rooms with total capacity of 35 beds, all with air-conditions, sea view verandas and private WC. Pronounced free wireless internet access. All have a wide veranda with a magnificent view to the sea.The seashore is just in front of your feet, some meters from your room. In our quite green garden breakfast is served and you may also have some of our own produced wine or "raki".You will find almost everything you wish in the village: cafe's, bars, restaurants, as well as bakery, butchery and supermarket, which make residence comfortable and pleasant. Myrtos is connected by bus to Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and Ierapetra, which is the major town of the area, 14 Km away and the 4th bigger town of Crete. You may also rent a car or motorcycle and visit Knossos, Festos, Matalla, Vai etc. However you never feel bored if you choose to stay around Myrtos. You may visit the ancient sites around the village and along the small hills of the area. You may rent a bike or take an afternoon walk to the valley and enjoy the smell of oranges and lemons. You may fish, go jogging along the beach or trekking to the nice gorges and forests, or enjoy the breeze in your veranda. ... more   less
