Athens backpackers made it easy for me when I was visiting Athens. The metro was a 2 minute walk away while you can reach the Acropolis Museum within 5 minutes by foot. The hostel was clean, has a lift (if you're too lazy to climb up the stairs) and provides breakfast for free (bun, jam and hard boiled eggs). Pop... More

This isn't the Hilton, and you can't expect that for thirty bucks a night. But for only being only a few blocks from the Acropolis, I believe I got my money's worth for the three nights I was there. The security was great there as I encountered no problems with the storage of my laptop and DSLR camera. The bathrooms... More

Walked up hoping to stay at the dorms - was told the dorms were full but we could rent a studio that is housed in a separate building about a 3-5 minute walk away. Location of bouth is fantastic - right next to the acropolis and row of bars. Nearby soulvaki reasonably priced and delicious. The studio apartment was clean... More

I found this hostel on WikiVoyage, they recommended it very warmly. I stayed three nights in a 4-bed dorm. The location is indeed fabulous, the service is very good, and the rooms are decent. One thing I'd recommend to the management though, is to installed an electric socket near each bed of the dorm, and a night lamp. I love... More

I stayed at Backbackers & Studio for quite a long time. The two hostels are two separate hostels under the same ownership. These people are seriously helpful and friendly. The rooms are very good and I never seen such effort in keeping the hostel rooms clean. (I think you could operate on the floor) The breakfast is basic which is... More

Hostel was literally a five minute walk to the Acropolis. It's in a more laid back area of Athens that isn't super busy or touristy (minus the archaeological sites). Check in wasn't until 2pm which was a problem as our flight arrived around 10am. However, they did have couches that were available to nap on. Luggage could be stored in... More

Easy to find thanks to excellent directions. I had a clean en suite mixed dorm. Try and get a bottom bunk this is where the plug socket is. The hostel has its own rooftop bar which is cheap! Great for meeting people and lovely balconies outside the dorms. The hostel also has a laundry close by and another bar which... More

this place is pretty awesome. I found it to be kind of expensive but it had everything you needed. The wifi was good and the neighbouring pub down the street was a great place to meet people especially when foot ball games were on as they are a sports bar. I met a ton of friends there and the location... More

I stayed a few day at AB and really enjoyed it. The place is clean and the kitchen useful. Many people pass through, so it's a good way to meet fellow backpackers. The staff is friendly and always available when you have a question. And Jacqueline is especially charming.

Really friendly staff, nice clean hostel and close to everything that you want to see in Athens. Good vibe around the place too. If you're travelling alone, you only need to hang around the common area for 30 minutes or so before you can get a group of people to head out with. Would thoroughly recommend!

Staying in Thissio / Makriyanni

Neighborhood Profile
Thissio / Makriyanni
Named after the well-preserved Thission (ancient temple of Hephaestus), Thissio is blessed with a small wooded park and some less frenetic streets that offer numerous quieter places to stay and eat. Largely pedestrianized Apostolou Pavlou Street runs between the Acropolis and forested Filopappou Hill, well worth climbing for more great panoramas, until it merges with Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. This leads to the up-and-coming area of Makriyanni, whose centerpiece is the magnificent new Acropolis Museum. Opposite the museum is the entrance to the southern slopes of the Acropolis, while the eponymous metro station nearby is at the top of Makriyanni Street, another strip of touristic cafés and restaurants.
