The location (close to museums, Acropolis, Zeus Temple, restaurants, etc.) is the best thing. It's also easy to get there by car. If you're lucky, you'll get a good view on the top floor rooms. For the rest, it's quite bland (borderline rip-off considering the price): * top-floor restaurant is windy and narrow (despite the view), with average food. *... More

Brought my girlfriend to Greece for her birthday, since we only had two nights in Athens we wanted to be close to the main attractions so I booked the Athens Gate Hotel, I mentioned that it was for her birthday that we would like a room with a view, I paid for the room with a view but got much... Great location easy walk to Acropolis, metro, syntagma and more. Friendly staff, very good breakfast. Traffic noise makes it hard to sleep, but that is probably true in most downtown hotels. Very small elevators.

Fabulous views of the Acropolis from our room on the 6th floor. Ask for a room on the 6th or 7th floor, at the back of the hotel, for similar views. Hotel is located on a very busy road so rooms in front can have noise issues. Very helpful and friendly staff. We had breakfast on the rooftop restaurant and... More

The hotel is simply opposite to the Temple of Olympian Zeus and it is close to the street. The view is good but you can hear the noise of the cars even in high floors. Location is very close to the metro station and outside restaurants. Breakfast is included and it is average. Overall, it is average among the hotels... More

Only stayed one night after our cruise ended. The hotel is very nice with contemporary decor. Breakfast was lovely and staff was very helpful and friendly. Would recommend this hotel to anyone. We were across the street from the Temple of Zeus and easy walking distance from the Acropolis. Both were a lovely view from the rooftop dining.

Most of the points go to the review, and the shower...both were great! The traffic noise from the road is quite significant but that's the price you pay for the view of the temple of Zeus and it's surroundings. The room was spacious, the bed was comfy, the maids were thorough. There are two small lifts for this hotel which... More

Our experience at Athens Gate was pretty good although our stay was just two nights long. The room was minimally done but then the vast, unhindered gorgeous views of temple of Zeus and Lycabettus hill and the greek sky did all the work needed. A bathroom with a (great) view is something you'll definitely like here. Comfortable bed, an adjoining... More

The hotel is simply opposite to the Temple of Olympian Zeus and close to Acropolis and old town Plaka. Unlike some old-fashioned hotels in Greece, this hotel is modern-styled one. Its rooftop restaurant is a big selling point. Very nice views of Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis are offered. Breakfast is indeed offered here. Fantastic! But the food is... More

We have just returned from an 8 night stay at the Athens Gate Hotel and had a wonderful stay. We received a warm welcome on our arrival and our room was perfect. We had asked for a quiet room with a view of the Acropolis and we were not disappointed. The room was clean well decorated and had comfortable beds... More

Staying in Thissio / Makriyanni

Neighborhood Profile
Thissio / Makriyanni
Named after the well-preserved Thission (ancient temple of Hephaestus), Thissio is blessed with a small wooded park and some less frenetic streets that offer numerous quieter places to stay and eat. Largely pedestrianized Apostolou Pavlou Street runs between the Acropolis and forested Filopappou Hill, well worth climbing for more great panoramas, until it merges with Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. This leads to the up-and-coming area of Makriyanni, whose centerpiece is the magnificent new Acropolis Museum. Opposite the museum is the entrance to the southern slopes of the Acropolis, while the eponymous metro station nearby is at the top of Makriyanni Street, another strip of touristic cafés and restaurants.
