We stayed here last year for a 4 night trip in Athens and wow, what a nice experience. The hotel was an old palace and luxurious touches are everywhere. We got upgraded to a junior suite, which was spacious, with contemporary shower and electronics. Our personal butler picks up immediately the couple of times we called and was able to... More

An excellent hotel in a central location, the Hotel Grande Bretagne's crowning glory is the view of the Acropolis from the 8th floor bar and outdoor restaurant. Upon entering the bar for a drink, we were astounded by the stunning view of the beautifully lit Parthenon with the crescent moon hanging over it. The sight was so breathtaking, we decided... More

This hotel is centrally located in the city within walking distance to the ruins, museums, shopping, and a metro right out the front door. I personally prefer trendy boutique hotels but this old styled hotel is exquisite. The rooms are beautiful and spacious with luxury bathrooms. The restaurant on the roof is a must as it has one of the... More

Checked in yesterday for 2 nites before a cruise. Week before arrival recieved a very nice email from manager, giving me a very nice impression. Check in took me 15 minutes as there were only 2 workers. I could barely keep my eyes open (30 hrs no sleep on flight) just long enough to be frustrated. Was assigned a "personal... More

This is possibly one of the most impersonal hotels I've stayed at in a long while. It's also full of huge groups of American tourists straight off their cruise ships and impossible to escape from. Despite the absolutely perfect location - smack in the middle of Athens and within walking distance of everywhere you might conceivably want to visit as... More

Our stay was after a cruise, booked not through the cruise line but by our AmEx Platinum. We checked in early and did not expect our room to be ready, no worries. When we were assigned our room we were downgraded in room category, the front desk staff could care less. It too close to 4 hours to get our... More

This is one of the great hotels of Europe. It has a history, wonderful architecture - here for the long haul. The only glitch is the service which ranged from good to appaling. I sat 10 feet from a framed notice proclaiming Alexander's to be amongst the world's best hotel bars, but the service was terrible, virtually non existent. I... More

The Hotel Grande Bretagne is a great hotel to stay at while visiting the sites in the hustle and bustle of gritty Athens. The rooms were spacious and very well appointed. The breakfast was included and was excellent with an extensive array of choices, to include, eggs, meats, cheeses, danish, coffees, etc. The location is perfect for those who prefer... More

We were booked at another hotel, and our tour upgraded us to this hotel. It was a fantastic experience. The breakfast on the roof with the view of the Acropolis was to die for (both view and food). The room was wonderful and absolutely clean and comfortable. The bathroom was so large, we joked about renting it out to other... More

This very nice hotel is located perfectly to allow visitors to experience all Athens has to offer without having to drive or hire a cab. The staff was helpful for the most part but did come across as a little shady and rude at times. The food is a hit or miss but there are so many great places to... More

Staying in Syntagma

Neighborhood Profile
Syntagma
Perhaps the best place to get your bearings is Syntagma Square, crowned by the imposing Parliament building on its upper side and surrounded by other large structures, such as the exclusive Hotel Grande Bretagne. The grand avenues that lead towards Omonia are also full of massive Neoclassical edifices like the Numismatic Museum and those around smaller Platia Kolokotroni. Here you will find lots of travel agents, bookshops and fashion shops, especially on Ermou Street. Just south of Syntagma Square, you can take a breather in the lush National Gardens, which extend into the grounds of the Zappeio palace and beyond to the ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus.
