The hotel is highly rated and has a great location across from the Parliament in a nice part of the city. My issue with the hotel is that no one was friendly or smiled at us for the 2 nights we stayed there. I see that others have experienced this as well. One would expect to be greeted on entering... My husband and I were treated to two nights at this wonderful hotel as part of our Windstar cruise package. It is truly an amazing hotel! On top of the luxurious room and other areas of the hotel, the staff is also amazing; kind, considerate, and extremely helpful. The included breakfast was a feast to be enjoyed overlooking the Acropolis!... More

I loved the hotel, it was in a beautiful location with a rooftop bar and restaurant over looking the Parthenon. Hotel amenities were excellent, good sized gym. Small but nice pool and lounging area. Food in the hotel was good. Not the best breakfast, but lunch was excellent. I will go back and I would not stay in a different... More

About a week ago, my newlywed wife and I spent one incredible night at the Grande Bretagne during our honeymoon. It was easily one of the best hotel experiences of my life. First, we were greeted with a glass of champagne in the butler reception room after a long morning of travel. The butler was extremely courteous and professional. He... More

After years of hearing about this place - something of an institution in Athens - I finally got to stay for a night. Situated in the heart of the city in Syntagma Square, and just across the road from the Parliament Building where the Evzones (those cute guys that form the Presidential Guard that wear short skirts and pompoms on... A truly lovely hotel with an impeccable staff and wonderful accommodations. Not far from any of the main attractions of Athens. I strongly recommend this hotel for those of you that are used to traveling in style.

I travel extensively all over the world. The unwelcome my son and I received at this hotel was one of the worst I have has the misfortune to experience. The staff was a disinterested overworked woman at the front desk that has to be either a sister or close relative of the owner based on her attitude. My son and... More

Our family stayed for 3 nights. The hotel has an excellent location for strolling around Athens. The rooftop restaurant, which they also smartly use for breakfast, has stunning views of Athens all ´round, with the Acropolis always in sight....you can sit outside if you want...excellent breakfast...Beautiful rooms, ours was toward the courtyard, but there was noise from the other rooms.... Stayed for 3 nights at the end of may. One of the top hotels in Athens along with its neighbor king Georges. Great location in syntagma square an easy train ride from the airport. The hotel is very grand with very luxurious amenities. The black out curtains are amazing and the bathroom is very well layed out if not huge.... More

The George V in Paris, the Waldorf Astoria in New York, Hotel de Russie in Rome -- there are a handful of luxury hotels that epitomize the cities where they are located. For Athens, that hotel is Hotel Grande Bretagne. The hotel is immaculately maintained with a spacious and gracious lobby. The staff are very hospitable -- even for those... More

Staying in Syntagma

Neighborhood Profile
Syntagma
Perhaps the best place to get your bearings is Syntagma Square, crowned by the imposing Parliament building on its upper side and surrounded by other large structures, such as the exclusive Hotel Grande Bretagne. The grand avenues that lead towards Omonia are also full of massive Neoclassical edifices like the Numismatic Museum and those around smaller Platia Kolokotroni. Here you will find lots of travel agents, bookshops and fashion shops, especially on Ermou Street. Just south of Syntagma Square, you can take a breather in the lush National Gardens, which extend into the grounds of the Zappeio palace and beyond to the ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus.
