Good location close to old town of Funchal. The traffic outside can however be a problem during early evenings and mornings. The kitchen in our room was tiny but well equipped. Dont miss the restsurant in the basement.

This place is over-rated. It is tired and dated and really needs an overhaul in terms of the interior i.e. Beds, decor, bathroom, kitchenette as well as the staff. It is grubby, poorly run and grotty. With no air conditioning it is always nice to leave the windows and doors open - well not here. The roads are noisy 24/7.... More

The room was quite noisy at night but the manager would have changed the room.the room itself was very clean and comfortable.two single beds with an additional couch. I was on my own but there was plenty of room for three people. Nice wooden floor in the bedroom! Good breakfast with a very friendly lady preparing such. Will definitely return... More

My friend and I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights in late May. We really enjoyed our stay, and would definitely stay here again. The hotel manager at the front desk was very helpful and friendly. Just bring him a map and he'll offer excellent recommendations. He even spent a while helping us figure out which levada walk to... More

Travelling on my own I was looking for value for money, space, cleanliness and location near to the old town. This apartment complex fulfilled all of the above. Sao Paulo is on the west end of Rua da Carreira and is the older more retro style of the two properties. I had a studio apartment on first floor. The room... More

We stayed a week at Sao Paulo. The hotel is in excellent condition and the cleaning service was great. We admired the floor in our room which was beautiful. I think it can be described as mosaics made of different kinds of wood. It is located close to the centre of the city which makes it far more convenient than... More

Stayed here for a week in one of the hotels apartments around the corner. Nice room at the back, quiet, clean and very covenient for the city and local good restaurants. Apartemtn had a good bed, staff kitchenette and very small bathroom (only negative point).Small balcony with table and chairs available. Very nice breakfast with a good choice. Friendly staff.

I stayed one week at Alegria. I book a room without balcony, but the hotel gave me room no. 22 with a very nice balcony. Thank you for that! The breakfast was OK and the room was cleaned every day - they even do the dishes for me. The only thing which was not so good: the Viking bar. Some... More

Spent lovely week in May in Sao paulo e Alegria. Very central and an excellent base to explore Funchal as well as the rest of the island as near to bus station! Spacious rooms with breakfast served but also with kitchen facilities. Restaurant in the basement but so much in the centre of Funchal that choice of restaurants was excellent.... More

We spent a week in hotel "Sao Paulo". There are several things which are just great in this hotel: the rooms are huge and there was even a small kitchen which we could use. The manager of the hotel is very nice and helpful guy, speaking english and german (and most likely even other languages). He helped us lot as... More
