This was our third year at the Gorgulho and we would not stay anywhere else in Funchal, even though it is one of the ugliest buildings on the island! Staff friendly. Breakfast good. Ideal location. Our room was large with a beautiful sea view. We love to walk during the day and dine out at night and this hotel is... more

We stayed in the Hotel Gorgulho for seven nights (20–27 May 2009) and it is true what other reviewers have said - that from the outside it is a bit ugly, but inside is very clean and tidy. The tiles on the exterior would be Portuguese azulejos (tiles) but in a modern style. Our room, 904, was quite small but... more

Just got back from Gorgulho aparthotel. Yes it is an ugly building but, clean, friendly, ideally located and adequate breakfast. Located at the Lido area - loads of restaurants within walking distance. Bus stop - 2 min walk - buy a weekly giro card works out at 1 euro per trip instead of paying on the bus charging 2 euros. Airport bus... more

Not the prettiest building in Maderia, and it would benefit from double glazing and air conditioning, but put that aside and you have a great base for a bargain break in Madeira. When asked where we were staying we were treated to some pitying looks, but when we revealed how much the hotel cost for our four night stay the... more

As a couple of 70+ year olds who read the reviews we knew what to expect. No problems at all, hired a car for the 2 weeks and drove right round the island. Swam on 14 days...in the sea of course. The Lido is OK for snorkelling but my favourite was Paul de Mer ( Note there is a tunnel... more

One of the oldest hotels in Funchal and the least attractive. The decor and fittings are a bit tired. However the accommodation was clean with a daily maid service. The restaurant and the food were well prepared and managed. The pool was also clean and well maintained. The staff were really friendly and keen to help. It's just 2 minutes... more

At first glance this hotel stands out as it has a very dated appearance with raw concrete and ceramic tiles on the outside. Public areas are also dated, but very clean. Bedrooms were refurbished a couple of years ago and are clean and fresh with some of the most thorough housekeeping I've experienced. I had an eighth floor room in... more

This hotel is old and a bit dated but is very clean. The breakfast was plentifull (dont expect full english though) The location although on a steep hill was only a few steps to the bus stop to travel to funchal center. The kitchenette was 2 cooking rings and a fridge and sink ,behind some doors we thought it was another... more

we were a party of 10 over 40s visiting Madeira for the first time. The hotel was chosen pot luck but what a find! even though the outside appearance is a little disconcerting it was always easy to find, the reception staff were always accommodating, changing rooms was easy if you found the traffic too noisey. the rooms were clean... more

Exactly what we expected a well worn hotel but with an old fashioned charm. We were 5 couples and everyone enjoyed, the towels and bed sheets were spotless. It felt clean in bed.Breakfast was excellent plenty of different breads, jams, meats, cheese, yoghurts etc. The hot section was very limited, don't bank on it ! but everything else at breakfast was good. Did not... more
