It had everything we needed! English spoken very well by staff. The location was superb. Very very clean. We had a top floor room very quiet. Weather was lovely at end of May! Very delighted. Breakfast ok. That is all I hv time for. We got ver fit walking the hills back from Town.

This is a charming hotel in it's laid back style, cracking sound wooden floor and interior design which takes you back in time. The price is considerably low in comparison to other hotels in Funchal, but since the hotel is about 700 meters from the coastline on a steep mountain slope above the old center, you may have difficulty walking... A ten minute uphill walk from downtown Funchal. Wonderful view over the bay.The hotel might need some renovation, but it has an oldfashioned charm. Friendly and service-minded staff. Your taxi to the airport can come cheaper if you ask the hotel to book it the day before your departure.

Great art deco styled hotel in a superb location near the centre of Funchal. Superb sun terrace, lovely room with ensuite all in vintage syle wood blocked floors etc. Nice small pool on roof, lovely staff, great price as well.Good base with hire car for rest of the island. Really quirky relaxed hotel with vintage glamour! Michael April 2015

Stayed here for four relaxing nights in March and thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Monte Carlo. It may be old fashioned and a bit dated in places but it is clean, well maintained and quiet. Highlight for me was the front terrace - great suntrap for breakfast and an excellent place to sit and while away the evening with... More

Dropped in for drinks on the patio overlooking the city and to sample the ambience of this old beautiful building. The manager was delightful but there was also an odd looking old man hanging about the lobby (as was mentioned by a previous poster). The interior of the hotel reflects the fact that the building was once a large mansion... More

Yes the hotel is dated. Yes, a refurb is desperately needed. But for the price there was nothing inherantly wrong with the place. Spacious rooms, we had great views out to the ocean, and breakfast/drink on the veranda looking out to the sea is beautiful and tranquil. Very quick and easy walk into central Funchal too (though beware it is... More

We spent a week in this old fashioned hotel, it's quite high up from the Center of Funchal and no good if your not fit as the walk back up is a killer. The first night we thought we would have dinner in the resturant as we were a bit tired and when it came about half an hour later... More

Lovely hotel with friendly, helpful staff. Stunning views, spacious room, varied choice of continental, buffet breakfast. Easy walk into town centre of Funchal, OK a little more strenuous walk back uphill but worth it for the view. None of the busyness and hype of hotel zone. Choose to eat indoors or outdoors on terrace/balcony. Will definitely recommend to friends/family and... More

Just back last night from a 4 day stay at the Hotel Monte Carlo, Funchal. The hotel is in a really good location for getting down to the centre of the town, literally a 10 minute walk downhill and your right in the middle of Funchal. The walk back is more difficult if your that wee bit older, perhaps for... More
