My wife and I stayed at the Girassol for 3 weeks in January/ February 2014 and we had such a wonderful time that we booked again for 2015, this time for 6 weeks. I have read several posts which I deem to be unfair. For the price that we pay, I consider this hotel to be good value for money... More

We stayed here for 2 weeks over Christmas and New year on half board basis. The rooms were good with lounge and separate bedroom [ although a little dated ]they were very clean and bed linen changed daily but alas no complimentary tea and coffee, which you would expect in a 4 star hotel. Christmas and New year eve gala dinners... More

Hearts sank as we were dropped off what a sad state the approach is. Dirty windows, balconies need painting, tatty. Rooms most depressing I've ever stayed in and I travel a lot If you like the 1970's look of brown brown brown you will love it Paradise ???? !!! Bar - filthy carpet and dead plants Outside floor covering to... More

Another lovely stay at this very good family owned and run traditional hotel. Maybe the previous reviewer had a 'rose tinted' memory of 11 years ago. The accommodation being mainly suite based is spacious with lots of storage space and a home from home feel. The general facilities are no worse than any other similar hotel and are enhanced totally... More

We came for a week in January (our first visit here since January 2004) and sadly we noticed a marked decline in almost everything: 3-star would be a more accurate reflection of the grade of this hotel today. The Girassol's strengths are the wonderful, kind and polite staff, the generous bedroom/bathroom/sitting room accommodation complete with fridge, and to some extent... More

This was my first holiday in Funchal and in the main was a good experience but there were certain parts I would want changed , tea making in your bedroom for instance 1-50 for a tray and 2 cups and 2 eus for 2 tea and coffee bags how ridiculous ,I did take it up with the owner on several... More

Great room, big and with impressive views. We could see New Year's Fireworks from the terrace at the top, where all the city can be perfectly seen. The staff were very helpful and kind. We could even borrow crutches. We had a great stay. The only con was the poor breakfast and the little and slow lifts.

A bit tired and dated but spotlessly clean with very friendly and helpful staff. Each room has a separate sitting room with tv and mini bar if required. About 25 minutes walk into Funchal centre. The breakfasts had a good choice, continental and English styles with plenty of different breads and croissants. However cant say the same for the evening... More

Totally agree with Kathy H's previous review this place is totally awful. There is nothing positive to say about it. The welcome was grumpy and all the staff were unfriendly and cold. The whole hotel is so dated and tired and dirty and worn out - it just needs totally gutting and start again from scratch. Bedroom was so depressing... More
