We came for a week in January (our first visit here since January 2004) and sadly we noticed a marked decline in almost everything: 3-star would be a more accurate reflection of the grade of this hotel today. The Girassol's strengths are the wonderful, kind and polite staff, the generous bedroom/bathroom/sitting room accommodation complete with fridge, and to some extent... More

This was my first holiday in Funchal and in the main was a good experience but there were certain parts I would want changed , tea making in your bedroom for instance 1-50 for a tray and 2 cups and 2 eus for 2 tea and coffee bags how ridiculous ,I did take it up with the owner on several... More

Great room, big and with impressive views. We could see New Year's Fireworks from the terrace at the top, where all the city can be perfectly seen. The staff were very helpful and kind. We could even borrow crutches. We had a great stay. The only con was the poor breakfast and the little and slow lifts.

A bit tired and dated but spotlessly clean with very friendly and helpful staff. Each room has a separate sitting room with tv and mini bar if required. About 25 minutes walk into Funchal centre. The breakfasts had a good choice, continental and English styles with plenty of different breads and croissants. However cant say the same for the evening... More

Totally agree with Kathy H's previous review this place is totally awful. There is nothing positive to say about it. The welcome was grumpy and all the staff were unfriendly and cold. The whole hotel is so dated and tired and dirty and worn out - it just needs totally gutting and start again from scratch. Bedroom was so depressing... More

Just returned from this hotel 1-8 Dec. What can I say! just such a nice place with excellent staff. Food first class, on restaurant set menu with a choice as not many guests before Christmas rush so they did not have the buffet so had best deal. Very reasonable for the first 2 weeks Dec. Bus stop to centre etc.... More

The hotel is in a good location, about a 20 minute walk to the port and a further 5 to the city centre one way and 5 minute walk from the Lido area the other. The rooms are a good size and kept impeccably clean. Fresh towels and bedding daily. The only thing absent is air con, although there is... More

From the moment we arrived until the time we left the staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. Our room on the 10th floor was excellent, with morning sun and views over the sea. We particularly appreciated the location of the hotel - only a 20 minute walk into the heart of Funchal, and close to the Lido... More

Just back from a week stay in this hotel and was not disappointed. The Hotel is exactly as all the pictures show, clean, quiet and friendly. The food is of high quality and well cooked if not limited in choice. The staff are very friendly and the location is very good. The rooms are spacious and very clean..there's not many... More
