I stayed here for a week in January 2005, booked as a package tour.
Location: excellent for exploring the city of Funchal and close to a lot of buses for other parts of the island, although main bus terminal is a 15 or 20 minutes walk. The Cathedral and city center are just across the street. Sea front 200 meters down the street.
Good budget choice, clean rooms, everything worked fine, like TV set and bathroom, staff friendly and helpful but some do not know more English than "coffee" and "tea". Breakfast simple. The only nuisance for me were the doves, all over the top floor terrace and on my windowsill when I opened the window. There must be noise from the city streets but I had a room facing the backyard so I really don't know.
I will stay here again if I do not need things like pool or sun bathing garden.
