Highly recommended. Great place to stay. Room had a lovely sea view and easy access to the pool. Plenty of Sun loungers every day and the outdoor bar served very welcome cocktails. Great location for the cable cars and it's away from all of the tourist traps. Some great restaurants nearby with good deals every night.

Porto Bay Group has other hotels in Madeira but, unlike this one, they are away from the elegant centre of Funchal, and it is indeed an elegant city with wide tree lined streets and beautiful sub-tropical parks. The hotel is situated on the Atlantic promenade in the quaint Old Town with its vibrant and versatile restaurants, although the hotel's own... More

Have been reading the fine tripadvisor reviews for this hotel ever since we booked this holiday and so arrived for a two week holiday with high expectations. I have to say that it met if not exceeded our expectations in every way. This is our second visit to Madeira having stayed at sister hotel The Cliff Bay last year.I have... More

Just had a short break here with hubby in suite 060 with sea view. Our room was lovely, extremely clean, short walk from the balcony to pool and terrace areas, immaculate colourful garden to look out onto, sitting room overlooks a park to the side. The hotel couldn't be in a better location with the flat promenade right outside, the... More

Great hotel. Great food. Amazing staff. What more could you ask for? Be sure it check out the rooftop terrace at night, very beautiful. (jacuzzi up there). Rooms are very clean. Contain a kitchenette with a fridge which is great for storing water and drinks. Can't think of anywhere else I would rather stay or would want from a hotel.

Firstly an explanation of the title of this review. Every Hotel has it's compromises, this one has the fewest of any Hotel we've ever stayed at. We'd booked a Junior Suite so the following experiences are based on that. The Hotel is ideally positioned, right on the promenade, so it's perfect for people with mobility issues. It's a short walk... More

I'm in two minds about posting this review. On the one hand too many excellent reviews could result in a flood of bookings making it difficult for us to secure our next visit here! On the other though, it would be unfair of me to try to keep this place a secret. My wife and I have just returned from... More

My husband and I stayed at this hotel last summer having previously stayed at Cliff Bay the year before and the Porto Mare twice before. The Santa Maria is by far in the best position in Funchal with the old town on your doorstep but not being intrusive. The rooms are ample though we did not have the best sea... More

returned from this hotel on 17th july 2015. From day 1. Was fantastic , only had bed and breakfast because we had heard there were loads of lovely restaurants at the back of the hotel to have dinner , which there were . Never had fillet steak like it . Fab. We booked a sea view room . Which had... More

Everything is true regarding the excellent location, the wonderful staff (Lena is their best asset) and cleanliness of this of this lovely hotel. We had a standard sea view room and a suite and both were very well appointed only marred by the noisy doors and draws (soft closers needed) and the truly horrible coat hangers. They were too big...
