Third visit to the Porto Santa Maria and we hope to go next year. Reception staff, bar staff and the rest of the hotel staff were friendly and helpful and made us welcome again. Great location being in the old town and lots of places to visit. The levada walks are stunning. One week wasn't nearly enough to do all... More

Having visited Madeira many times on cruises, this was our first stay. Overall the hotel was fine but they do not seem to listen to guest requests. We booked a suite and asked for a room overlooking the harbor, what we got was a suite overlooking a car park which was noisy and in use 24/7, also constant foot traffic... More

This is a great hotel. The staff are all friendly from the receptionists, Bar staff and Luiz the man who brings the hawk (Pigeon) while you are eating your breakfast. To be fair the facility is so well kept you don't really need to ask for anything........ the only time I had a concern was when a Hire car company... More

This was our fifth visit to the Porto Santa Maria and it is not likely to be our last. The hotel has many attributes, not least its location virtually on the refurbished promenade, but its particular strength is the people who work there. From the reception, which is staffed by people who are pleasant, professional and knowledgeable, to the people who work in the restaurants... Porto Santa Maria Hotel exceeded our expectations in every way. The location by the beach and sea was ideal involving no climbing ,nearby amenities including Cable Car and shops. Couldn't fault the service, food excellent including champagne for breakfast and plenty of everything. very friendly staff. Book a room with a sea view and you will be delighted. We had... More

Wonderful hotel, on the promenade near to the cable cars. No hills to climb and easy walking. The staff are very friendly especially in the dining room. The food is varied and delicious. Everything possible available at breakfast (even porridge if requested). Food available at the pool bar at reasonable prices. Always plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas available. Our room... More

We've stayed in various Portobay hotels in Madeira and the Algarve but this was our first time in Santa Maria which is handily located at the end of Funchal's promenade, next to the cable car terminus at the edge of the Old Town. From the sea facing aspect of the hotel there is a magnificent view of the harbour where... More

Hotel in great location for old town and cable cars providing access to Monte, Tropical And Botanical Gardens. Rooms good standard, beds very comfortable. Pools very disappointing, only 1.10m deep and very rough surface that grazed our feet and most uninviting in colour, sandy coloured, not blue. Breakfasts ok but not great. Whole experience spoiled by unhelpful Reception Staff member... More

I am looking forward to visiting this hotel later on in the year and expect to receive the usual high service. Whilst the surroundings of the old town do not apparently promise a high class stay it is all very deceiving as coupled with the warm reception the hotel consistently provides all you would need.
