We stayed 3 days in the "new" building next to the sea. Good views over the Ocean, but nothing else. The hotel is rated 4 stars but is far away from a real 4 stars hotel. The rooms need urgently a refurbishment and the bathroom looks like a pension bathroom. Breakfast in the terrace over the Atlantic was nice, but... More

This quinta is a little haven of peace in the busy capital of Madeira, Funchal. It has few if any pretensions but does what it does very well. It's excellent staff take good care of their house guests as if they are part of their family. It's rooms are not luxurious or grand. They are small and simple. We stayed... More

If you like concrete boxes for a holiday, this is not for you. We like the old with character feel even if the odd floorboard creaks or the sash windows rattle a little bit. Great location to get into the main Funchal action with nothing more than a maximum 15 minute stroll. The people in the hotel are very friendly,... More

We enjoyed a great 7 night stay here, a big and comfortable superior room, really good balcony and a lovely view. Yes the hotel could do with a bit of an update in furnishings and decor but it is difficult to criticise it when the general ambiance is so relaxing and peaceful yet only 10 minutes walk to the centre... Booked this hotel for its location which is one of the few positives. Easy to access Funchal centre if you cross the bridge and descend through the other hotel saves a trek up the hill!! We had a room in the house which was not worth it. The room was large but quite shabby, three windows but no balcony. The curtains... More

We have just returned from a week at this hotel and our first time in Madeira. As it is our choice to avoid the large impersonal 'plastic' hotels, the Penha de Franca was an excellent choice discovered through Tripadvisor. Our room was in the old/original house, was very spacious, did not have a balcony or terrace but had all facilities... More

Not having been to Madeira before, we weren't sure what to expect, and could see that there were the usual multi-storey hotels you see on the Costas, but no beach. We found this place on TripAdvisor, and my wife liked the idea of the gardens, so we thought we'd give it a go. It must have started as a large... More

In a quiet location within easy walking distance of Funchal centre. Good size room with balcony overlooking the attractive garden in which there was a good swimming pool. Bedroom furniture needed replacement - we had a chest of drawers between the beds with drawers that jammed and a small table with kitchen chair in lieu of a dressing table. No... More

Stayed here for 4 nights in October 2013 - no complaints whatsoever. Very nice hotel in great location. Helpful staff and nice rooms. Walking distance to Funchal centre and a good base to drive around the island. Highly recommended for a relaxing holiday.

I visited this lovely old hotel back in February 2008 and made a very welcome second visit last week. As ever it was peaceful and welcoming. Nestled between two modern looking hotels it is an oasis of calm. Beautiful gardens. Excellent dining. We were tucked away in Rooms 37 and 38 which proved extremely private and special. We were disappointed... More
