We actually chose to stay at the Da Penha De Franca during a visit to Madeira in 2012, when we stayed in one of the many marble palaces that are littered along the coast line. We decided that we would prefer something a little more traditional if we ever visited again and came across it on one of our walk... More

I was pleasantly surprised by just how lovely madeira is and this hotel suited us down to the ground whilst not luxurious it was very clean and comfortable. Ideally situated right by the sea and a very easy walk in to town plenty of trips on offer we were on a b@b basis but the night we ate in were... More

The hotel is very well located beside the sea, close to many restaurants and a pleasant stroll along a wide promenade to the centre of Funchal (which is currently undergoing extensive building works). We had a spacious, clean and comfortable ground floor room with a terrace overlooking the pool to the Atlantic. The room had air conditioning, a fridge, flat... More

Hotel is linked by bridge to the older part of the hotel making it easy to use either' s facilities . Staff were very attentive rooms clean , fresh towels when you wanted and well stocked ( even... Having booked and paid extra for 2 rooms with a balcony with garden view we were very disappointed to have a patio with a view of a tree and a bush. The rooms on the website all look lovely and bright but ours, number 38, was dark and dingy. Situated away from the main house at the side of the... More

It was my third visit to Madeira and the second staying in this hotel. The first time it was in 2001. The island is still as a pearl in the Atlantic ocean. This is a really wonderful place ! The hotel - both De Franca & MAR - still have one of the best location, service, pools, flowers and of... More

First time in Madeira and we hit lucky. Upon arrival to our hotel we were warmly welcomed and swiftly checked into the lower part of the hotel, which felt more modern and every room a sea view. Our room was freshly decorated, clean and well appointed. My only bugbear was there was no dressing table in the room therefore nowhere... More

Just returned from an excellent holiday in funchal. This was our third visit to Funchal and this hotel was the best we have found. The location, service, amenities food and accommadation were excellent. Staff were friendly and accommodating and in Joe's bar we were treated like old friends.
