Simply one of the best weekend breaks I've had. The Pestana Palace Hotel with its wonderfully well-appointed rooms - hey, its a palace - stained glass, original paintings, beautiful gardens and great bars and restaurant, I cannot recommend highly enough. Hotel is a bit far away from the city centre but taxis are really inexpensive. We had ordered an airport pick-up via concierge which was a Mercedes drive but compared to the prices of taxis I recommend the use of latter. Stayed at the Pestana for 5 nights. Loved the hotel. Oppulent surroundings but friendly accomodating staff. The rooms (garden room) are ordinary enough and noisy. Breakfast was very good.
