Great location and a lovely building with superb art deco styling. But it needs somebody with deep pockets to spend some cash on it. The building deserves some tlc. At the very least the decor need replacing - and how long have the curtains been up! Probably as long as the worn out towels. Friendly staff and good service. It... More

I spent two nights in this hotel and the location was great (one block from the train station and the downtown area, view of the river from my room) but the hotel needs to invest in some basic refreshments -- the hotel has a musty smell (from old carpet?) and the room felt dark (even with large windows opening to... Astoria looks very nice in fotos, but unfortunately the truth is not so beautiful. Especially the corridors and rooms are in need of renovation. They do not meet todays standards as a decent hotel. All around feeling in a hotel is a bit stuffy. Anyway the location is great. Everything is very near and the center of Coimbra is really... More

Firstly the hotel is situated in very good location, easy access to centre and stations.Secondly you dont find such a character very often any more, where the lift has a seat and the bar is "help your self" style although you still have to pay:) The rooms are very clean and the breakfast is good. The only problem is that... More

A beautiful Art Nouveau hotel when it opened in 1926. Black and white pictures in the lobby attest to it. However this is an hotel not a museum, and an hotel requires upkeep and maintenance. Unfortunately, both were lacking at the Hotel Astoria. We encountered moldy rooms (we had to change rooms), no in-room phone, non-working AC, filthy walls in... More

We stayed here for a couple nights. This hotel is a very hip experience. It's done in Art Deco and has fantastic common rooms to have a drink or read book. As some of the other reviews have noted: it is a bit dated and worn, the elevator can be slow, and the wifi really only works in the lobby.... More

This is a classic '50's hotel, unchanged. Certainly a trip back in time. Paid $70 US--a BARGAIN. Great location in the heart of the town. Public overnite parking is across street-be careful. BUSY town at 4:00 in the afternoon. Bought pottery here in the walled city. Italian rest on the river-disappointing. OUr window view of street and river was a... More

The Astoria is a beautiful Art Deco hotel. I fully expected an Agatha Christie character to come through the beautiful cut glass doors to the dining room. The elevator is a wonderful original that has updated controls. It has glass panels so you can see the stairs that wind around it up to the upper floors. All of the furniture... More

The Astoria occupies two conjoined nondescript late(?) 19th century buildings on the riverside. Hidden inside is a virtually intact Art Dec interior dating from 1926, made by Venacio Nascimento of Porto, see photo. It was like staying in a museum! It is widely accepted that Art Deco furniture is all style and poor build quality, but the furniture was in... More

as someone said, best place for this hotel is in the river. old, dirty, tired plus i got bed bug bites here... a john cleese type receptionist and nothing much improved. it is noisy being right on the road and not at all appealing.
