We stayed her for 5 nights in September and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and aim to be back. It is a beautiful old manor house but the service and food is as good as you could want. The owners were away for the first few days but in their absence Olga looked after us regally. Nothing was too much trouble... More

Solar de Lalem is a small traditional style hotel/guest house with very comfortable rooms - spacious, all en suite, with Portuguese style furnishings and atmosphere, although the proprietors are actually German and speak very good English. It is friendly and relaxed and there is a small pool although the weather did not tempt us to swim. There is a bar... More

Out of the blue, my wife had suggested a short break in the Azores. I thought, 'why not?'. So we found ourselves very late one night at Ponta Delgado Airport, with a hire car and vague directions to reach Maia on the other side of the island in the dark, and a totally unknown hotel. Amazingly, the proprietors, Gabriele and... More

This is an old building so does not offer modern amenities but what it does offer is a place to really relax. This old mansion house is stone-built with high ceilings so has a cool and spacious feel about it. The surrounds are very quiet and peaceful, helped by a view of the sea from the garden. The owners and... More

Our first three nights in the Azores were spent here. Very friendly reception from Olga and the other members of staff. The owners were very attentive. Had a great meal in, on the last night. Made to feel very welcome. The accommodation was basic, but clean and well maintained. I have some fond memories of this place, including my first... More

Solar de Lalém is a an old manor house (parts are 17th century) on the outskirts of the village of Maia. Our room was high-ceilinged: furnishings were traditional and rather spare. There was a shower attachment on the bath which took a while to warm up. We had good views over the village and the coastline beyond. We could get... More

Spent three nights (booked via Archipelago Choice whom we recommend if you're holidaying in the Azores, as they are very helpful and knowledgeable). Very interesting house, full of character - converted from an old monastery/church. Comfortable bedroom, use of lovely library/lounge. Good base for walking (Maia costal walk, Furnas lake, for example). German owners (fluent English) made us very welcome.... More

Very nice mansion, far away from the crowds. Garden and in-front terrasse are really nice and swimming pool is nice and private. Rooms are decorated in old style. Maybe not as comfortable as we would do in a new building. Owners are German-Bayerish, so you will find same kind of hospitality as in a German Gasthaus. They will never get... More

This is a renovated manor house run as a b&b, with dinner provided occasionally. The owners give a day's notice and ask guests to sign up to eat there. The best thing about it is definitely the friendly, helpful attitude of the owners and their staff. Nothing is too much trouble for guests from advice to practical help. However there... More

Disregard the postings about lack of friendliness -- we received a wonderful welcome from the English-speaking proprietors, who offered good dining and touring suggestions. The hotel has a pretty breakfast area in a garden and is within walking distance of Maia, a charming, untouristic town. It is just a few miles from an interesting tea plantation and easy driving to... More
