Our first three nights in the Azores were spent here. Very friendly reception from Olga and the other members of staff. The owners were very attentive. Had a great meal in, on the last night. Made to feel very welcome. The accommodation was basic, but clean and well maintained. I have some fond memories of this place, including my first... More

Solar de Lalém is a an old manor house (parts are 17th century) on the outskirts of the village of Maia. Our room was high-ceilinged: furnishings were traditional and rather spare. There was a shower attachment on the bath which took a while to warm up. We had good views over the village and the coastline beyond. We could get... More

Spent three nights (booked via Archipelago Choice whom we recommend if you're holidaying in the Azores, as they are very helpful and knowledgeable). Very interesting house, full of character - converted from an old monastery/church. Comfortable bedroom, use of lovely library/lounge. Good base for walking (Maia costal walk, Furnas lake, for example). German owners (fluent English) made us very welcome.... More

Very nice mansion, far away from the crowds. Garden and in-front terrasse are really nice and swimming pool is nice and private. Rooms are decorated in old style. Maybe not as comfortable as we would do in a new building. Owners are German-Bayerish, so you will find same kind of hospitality as in a German Gasthaus. They will never get... More

This is a renovated manor house run as a b&b, with dinner provided occasionally. The owners give a day's notice and ask guests to sign up to eat there. The best thing about it is definitely the friendly, helpful attitude of the owners and their staff. Nothing is too much trouble for guests from advice to practical help. However there... More

Disregard the postings about lack of friendliness -- we received a wonderful welcome from the English-speaking proprietors, who offered good dining and touring suggestions. The hotel has a pretty breakfast area in a garden and is within walking distance of Maia, a charming, untouristic town. It is just a few miles from an interesting tea plantation and easy driving to... More

I stayed for a week in this lovely place. The house & garden are truely amazing. My room and & bathroom were clean and spacious. The German owners/managers created a very friendly and familiar atmosphere. Almost every evening, we were sitting in front of the house chatting and listening to their stories about the island. Don't expect all the comfort... More

Well, we loved this place, and it suited us very well indeed. It sets out to be independent, different and relaxing, and is a nice quiet spot. The owners were absolutely charming and judged it well whether you wanted to chat or be left in peace and quiet. The place is an ideal base for touring the island. We are... More

On a vacation to Sao Miguel we came across this lovely old inn. as we drove through the small town of Maia. My husband and I stopped to look around the premises, and were surprised to find that the building is much more charming than the owner! When we asked questions about the place (we actually thought it would be... More
