Our first stay in a Pousada and we were impressed by the standards. The public rooms are huge (the hotel was formerly a convent and the nuns obviously lived well!) and, for a town centre hotel, the gardens and swimming pool are a good size. The buffet breakfast (as we found at all Pousadas) was extensive and very good. There's a set dinner for 30 Euros, including wine, if you don't want to eat a... more

We stayed for one night in this sleepy little town in the Alentejo after 3 nights in the Sheraton Algarve. What a contrast - and one for the better if you like the real Portugal. The building is just lovely with monumental public areas (including a chapel), private parking and an excellent location in the old town. We were able to walk easily to the castle and shops (not much else to see in Beja... more

Two of us stayed here for one night in March 2008. We choose the Pousada because it had a high rating in Michelin, 4 red houses. We had a nice room, a former convent cell, which was very comfortable. Reception wasn't very helpful, just gave us a map of the area without any explanations. We knew there wasn't much by way of sights in Beja, and this turned out to be correct. We had lunch... more

We spent 2 nights at this Pousada. The covent is really fantastic but its main problem is its need for renovation and for attention to details... Some examples : non-functioning light in the room, spoted carpets in the room and in corridors, dirty and yellow shower curtain, spidernet on lights, challengeable swimming pool water cleaningness, lack of poolbeds (the pool area looked like a crowded Algarve beach in Auguts)... The global experience is positive, but... more

A breathtakingly beautiful converted convent that totally overwhelmed us with its charm and serenity. The common areas are magnificent, the dining room is like stepping into a fantasy of the middle ages and the entire place was better kept than many museums we visited. They even play a soundtrack of melodic chants in the hallways to simulate the atmosphere. The nuns who lived here can't have had it this good. more
