We stayed just for 1 day and we were wonderfully surprised... It stays in the historic city centre, walking distance to the castle. The historic building is just amazing with the convent areas very well kept. Being Beja such a warm city in the Summer, the nice swimming pool is something to value and is prepared with a small one... More

We stayed one night in June 2014 at Pousada de Beja. Hotel is located right beside the center of Beja city. Just one corner and you are in the main walking street (market street). Hotel itself is amazing. Pousada is wery wery wery nicely renovated honoring the history of the building! The building still keeps the atmosphere of an old... More

Beja - we were not wild about it. The castle was definitely memorable, but that was about it for us as far as sight seeing goes. However, this hotel is simply lovely. It drips with old world elegance and has an incredibly courteous and helpful staff. It's a very quiet, solemn place and has so many rooms you can get... More

Last year we stayed here for 2 nights for my husbands birthday. We enjoyed it so much we decided to return this year. We only wanted 1 night as it was also our daughters 40th so are off to the UK for a joint family celebration. In fact we were'nt going at all until I found out that we would... More

This pousada is situated in the centre of the town of Beja so most convenient for shopping & as a base to visit the Roman & prehistoric sites of the area. The staff are most friendly & the pousada is large & well apportioned with large open areas on the ground floor & bedrooms are very spacious. The breakfast is,... More

The pousada is not up to par with the other pousadas that we stayed in in Portugal. It is shabby and understaffed. When we entered it was deserted, and only a single young boy who spoke no English was staffing the front desk. He didn't understand that he was to help us with our luggage and didn't know how to... Wonderful hotel, good position and nice they haven't stuck a 100 room extension on. Some interesting rooms and gardens. The rooms are large and well appointed but clearly haven't been updated recently - but all very clean. However don't count on a fantastic culinary experience in the restaurant - good service but chef not up to par. Food uninteresting. Even... More

This pousada is a stunning place to visit. It is spacious and architecturally beautiful, restored with tremendous taste and style. There are only 35 rooms, beautifully designed and with large ensuite bathrooms. The restaurant is in a magnificent old refectory and serves very good, if a bit pricey, food. The breakfast buffet is very good, and can be eaten on the... More

This beautiful Pousada was a former monastery and walking through the long wide corridors you will may feel the mystique atmosphere of living in the 14 century Our comfortable and charming room was well decorated, warm colors and nice wooden furniture, private bathroom and cable TV. Unfortunately the room doesn't have Wi-Fi available neither tea/coffee facilities which was bit disappointing... More

Great location in the middle of town and absolutely beautiful restored nunnery. The rooms and particularly the public rooms are stunning. How many hotels have there own church built in. Didn't find the staff, except Ana on reception, too friendly but what a wonderful experience.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Pousada de Beja, Sao Francisco, is a hotel right in the centre of the city, in an old XIII century convent, the result of which is a majestic, impressionable architectural work, which represents religious and gothic architecture. The first registers of the convent date back to 10th November 1268, a date which marks the emergence of the S. Francisco Community in Beja under the initiative of the Captain General Lopo Esteves and the Councillors Diogo Fernandes and Vasco Martins. Opened in 1994, this historic luxury hotel in Beja has kept the original features of the old building, containing many spacious areas, high ceilings with predominating white walls and decor of local crafts and antiques, giving it a warm welcoming to visitors of the Pousada. In the old central nave, contemporary art expositions give life to the walls. The hallways, ample and stripped, connect the old monks' chambers which have been remodelled and transformed into welcoming bedrooms with an inviting view of the pool and garden. Nserted in the heart of Alentejo, the Pousada can help their guests plan a number of diverse activities including bicycle rides, horse treks and hikes. The Beja Castle is only 700 metres from the Pousada de Beja and the Queen Dona Leonor Museum is found a mere 300 metres away. The Pousada de Beja is a true oasis in the Alentejo plain. Come and relive these old memories, with almost 800 years of history, in a real haven in the Alentejo plain. ... more   less
