Great, old building. Terrific hospitality. Gorgeous public spaces. Excellent breakfast. Spacious, high-ceilinged room. Best possible location. But the rooms have crossed the line from comfortable to shabby. Towels are threadbare; carpets stained; bathroom primitive; television tiny and black-and-white (who knew those even existed anymore!). We were totally charmed by the city and by the proprietor, but would probably choose another... more

We loved the Erasmus - had one of the large rooms with a high antique bed - was so much more atmospheric than a generic chain hotel room. Breakfast was lovely too. The bathroom was a bit on the basic side but that was a minor complaint and the room and feel of the hotel more than made up for... more

The hotel has a midieval decor theme going, which is quite charming, but you could do without the old beds. Remember to ask for a room with a view. Some of the rooms face a narrow courtyard allowing no light and no view. Breakfast was good, staff spoke good English, no parking. If we go to Gent again, we would... more

We stayed twice at the hotel and really enjoyed its funky charm, location and quiet rooms. Also, the staff (English speaking) are very helpful. If you're lucky, one of the staff will give an impromptu organ concert in the sitting room. The garden off the breakfast room is lovely and available to guests; the breakfast choices are more than adequate... more

This is a well-priced hotel on a side street near all the sights. Very friendly staff, good breakfast and 'atmospheric' rooms. About 250m from secure parking, the hotel itself is a bit nondescript from the street so is easy to drive right past. Tea and coffee facilities in room were much appreciated!! more

I had to post about this hotel as there were so many other positive reviews and people should know--the hotel was seriously not clean to the extent that I was uncomfortable there but since it was only a couple of nights tried to deal with it. The blanket on our bed was filled with hairs of all kinds (!) and... more

Not even an average hotel can spoil the town of Gent. We had a basic but atmospheric room for 3 nights. Some creaks on the floor boards from the neighbours above, and on the stairs late at night. Adequate breakfast of cold variety in a room which looks on to a wonderful garden. We had requested a "double" room but... more

We stayed at the Erasmus in June 05 mainly becuase of the reviews seen on this website. However, I was disappointed... The room itself (#5) was large and had great features ie beamed ceilings, fireplace, beautiful windows BUT the bathroom was from the 1970s', pink with worn pink towels... very basic indeed. The breakfast was also very stark - no... more

When you book, splash out and ask for the luxury double on the second floor, overlooking the garden. Wow! It's big enough for a dinner party - with table and chairs included! Bath and separate shower sparkling clean, very comfortable bed with beautiful, antique bedhead matching the wardrobe and other furniture. Adjustable thermostats on radiators very useful. We thought it... more
