Like many others I thought this would be a nice place to stay. I am a native of Ghent and have been past the entrance 1000s of times of course. A sad disappointment. The first room I was shown to stank of stale sweat; the bathroom was about 40 degrees. A musty annex to the actual hotel. The room next... more

To start with the good things: very friendly reception when I arrived. The location is excellent, in the middle of downtown Gent, the price good. But... I booked a parking and when I called to find out how I could get there, I was told the hotel didn't have one. When I arrived at the hotel, however, there were parking... more

Seedy, dirty, untidy and disappionting. The stairs leading to our bedroom were so steep you had to go down backwards. Three broken lightbulbs in our room, no ventilation in the bathroom. the breakfast room was in a separate building from the main hotel, and although the breakfasts were nice, the mousetraps in the dining room were off-putting. The location of... more

I was scouting for a suitable hotel for lodging a group to Ghent in September. I booked the room on our GDS system Apollo and specified and paid extra for a castle view room. Well my room was on the 2nd floor, the view of the castle was between 2 buildings about 2 inches of the castle were visible. I... more

Staff was friendly, high-ceilings in room are lovely, great fluffy pillows, across from the amazing castle, great breakfast. Super location to see all the major sites although far from city train station but accessible by tram. We asked for another less-smoky room and got it no problem. We also got a special off-season rate and that made it a super... more

I stayed in this hotel for 3 days in January with my husband. We spent our honeymoon in Ghent and enjoyed the city very much. My husband booked a special package at the Gravensteen hotel that included a free breakfast, welcome drink and entrance to the Gravensteen Castle. On arrival, we were greeted by polite staff, and given our keys... more

Lesson learned: check with TripAdvisor before you book! Next time we will! Anyway, we had decided to spend a weekend in Ghent - which we didn't regret. Beautiful city, great atmosphere. When we looked at various hotels, we took a liking to the Hotel Gravensteen that shows some great photos on its website. You get the impression of a really... more

The photos the hotel displays of the supposed rooms bears no resemblance to what we ended up in: *The toilet resembled something from a train station. *My body felt bruised after sleeping in their lumpy rusty springed excuse for a bed. *The rooms are so badly insulated against sound that I could hear the person in the room next door... more

Stayed in this hotel a couple of weeks ago and thought it was terrible. My room stank of smoke, the double bed was two tiny single beds pushed together which came apart every time I turned over. There were cigarette burns in the furniture, half of the light bulbs didn't work and I could hear every word and movement of... more

We first stayed at the Gravensteen Hotel in 2003, and chose to stay there again in 2005. The first time we had a "luxury room with view" which was quite strange; it was a very, very large room with a box containing a bathroom plonked into it. The view was of the Gravensteen castle which is spectacularly lit at night.... more
