Bearing in mind that Leiden just isn't the town for great hotels, I would definitely recommend to stay here. Most of the larger hotels are outside the city centre. And I found that The Doelen is quite a bit better than Nieuw Minerva, the other mid-size/mid-price hotel in the centre, both in terms of location and service. It is true... more

In our opinion, it's not as bad as some reviewers have claimed. The hotel has a fairly central canal-side position - better than the Holiday Inn where we stayed once before - and an attractive facade. We found the staff friendly and helpful in a laid-back sort of way. As for value, we went at a time when the exchange... more

We stayed for 1 night at Hotel de Doelen and booked one of their new rooms on the front side of the hotel on the canal street. It was lovely! A very large room ( think it was # 14) that was modern and classy and also had a sofa and nook with a desk. Large windows look out onto... more

We stayed overnight at De Doelen and couldn't leave fast enough! The room on the top floor is accessed via extremely steep stairs - fortunately the guy on reception carried our bags, otherwise it would have been impossible. The room furnishings are old and a bit threadbare; everything is musty or stinks of smoke (my colleague had an asthma attack... more

First, you will not find many accommodations in Leiden which are cheaper. Given that, the hotel is certainly adequate. The front desk was cordial, but not overly friendly. The rooms are accessed by a steep staircase. The room was large & had two twins put together (however, they kept rolling away from each other in the night). The furnishings are... more

We studied the hotels in Leiden long and hard before booking Hotel de Doelen. It had mixed reviews on TripAdviser but we knew the location to be good. And it was; the location was great and the building itself has such potential for something great, but alas it was a let-down inside. Whilst clean, the rooms were dated, old fashioned... more

We stayed in De Doelen's "suite." The canalside mansion the hotel occupies does have high ceilings and 17th century touches, but the quality of the furnishings and facilities leaves much to be desired. With a 1st-floor room (and doors) so huge, one would think they could have put a double or queen size bed in the room. Instead, two twin... more

The Hotel de Doelen in Leiden is nicely located and must have been a grand old canal house at one time. Now it is an awkward shell of a hotel. It was necessary to haul our suitcases up several flights of narrow stairs to arrive at our room. Here we found a large room that dwarfed its small furnishings. There... more

I stayed in the de Doelen with my husband and eight year old child. I was therefore charged for a triple room, which was 150 Euros per night. As this was within our budget, I did not mind paynig, but I thought value for money, this hotel was at the bottom of the scale of hotels we experienced on this... more

We rented one of the more expensive Suite rooms on our stay in Leiden. The room was big and a very good value for the money. There was an old fireplace in the room made entirely with handpainted 'Delft'-like pottery tiles. The hotel itself is quite an old building and the layout of the hotel is a bit confusing at... more
