De Doelen is a terrific hotel situated in the historic heart of Leiden -- it's location, the Rapenburg, is even one of the stops on the walking tour of the old city. Leiden is a quick 15-minute train trip from Schiphol and a great change of pace from Amsterdam. The hotel is atmospheric and historic while still providing up-to-date conveniences... More

A very nice and classic hotel with a great location on a central canal in Leiden's center. As with most historical Dutch buildings, the rooms are smaller than average, but in no way cramped. Staff was very friendly.

This is an old, but well renovated, hotel. It has fairly steep stairs and no lift, although the receptionist will quickly volunteer to help you with your luggage. We opted for a ‘luxury’ room, which proved to be rather an overstatement for what was a fairly ordinary room, although it had a very good bathroom. (As he had requested a... More

The hotel is in the centre of the city, 10-15 minutes walk from Leiden Centraal station and also close to Old Town.We spent one night at the de Doelen.Staff is very friendly and helpful. Although the hotel overlooks to the canal, our room was looking to backyard whish is fine for one night. We didn’t have our breakfast so we can not... More

I was taking a course at the ITC and this was 200 meters from the facilities. It is run by a nice family. The hotel is really old, but the bathrooms are new. No air conditioning, so it wa a little hot sometimes. I enjoyed my stay.

We found the hotel facade and the location of the de Doelen to be excellent. There was nothing else about this hotel that was at the 3 star level, however. The staff were disinterested, our (deluxe) room was tired, cramped, and stuffy -- just uncomfortable. We couldn't wait to leave.

Leiden is a charming town and this hotel was quirky but fine. Lots of character! Right opposite a canal, and not totally renovated, it feels like it belongs in this place. Don't expect grandeur...it is a bit faded, but we had a room overlooking the canal which was huge, a large and well renovated bathroom, it was a quiet and... More

The hotel is in a very old building, so expect thin walls, some creaking from the floors, a not very constant water temperature if you shower at the same time as many other people. However, our room was very large, bright, and had everything we needed for our stay with our little daughter (18 months). She certainly enjoyed staying there... More

I stayed here after driving my son to Leiden to collect him after completing his Master's at the university. The position couldn't be better - near the town centre, on a typical canal and with a British pub on the opposite bank. The hotel looks good from the outside and is OK inside - but only just! The reception is... More
