Volendam is a great option if you want to visit Amsterdam but not stay in the city - it's about 20 minutes by bus to the centre. The Hotel Spaander has a nice location, overlooking the water, and is surrounded by as many dutch tourist shops & bars as anyone could ever want. We stayed here for a few days last year in October when the weather was unusually cold.
