Haarlem is a small nice city near Amsterdam. You can reach by regional train just a few stations from central railway. Very clean & nice hotel. Water boiler is provided at room! You can reach easily at Kokenkof which is main flower exhibition of Netherlands easily from bus station near hotel & buy ticket to visit the most beautiful gardens!... More

I agree with many other posters that staying somewhere like Haarlem is a nice alternative to staying in Amsterdam. A quick (15min) trip on the train to Amsterdam Centraal, and better VFM. The hotel itself is, as others have described, a little dreary but we found it clean and warm. The food in the restaurant was not good - we... More

Getting to this hotel was easy and cheap, which is not easy to say in Europe on the day before Christmas. From Schiphol airport take the 300 Bus to Haarlem. Change at Haarlem station onto the number 3 bus direction Schalkwijk Centrum and hop off at Hout Plein bus stop. The hotel is 2 minutes walk from here. It is not... More

A great retreat with excellent food. For those couples and thirtysomethings that have travelled to Amsterdam and like a quieter alternative every now and then, this is the place. Only 9 euros return to Amsterdam but you can stay in Haarlem for all the same attractions that Amsterdam has to offer and feel like you are a world away. Nice... More

After having booked and paid for another hotel for four nights and having a sleepless first night due to location of that hotel myself, my husband and our son came upon the Carlton Hotel today and booked in immediately after walking around Haarlem looking for somewhere to stay. The front desk staff were welcoming and very professional , the restaurant... More

Nice Continental breakfast, sausages are European so not to my taste. Food in the hotel is nice. Bar is quiet, but nice for a quick drink before heading out for the evening. Regular stays get you complementary mini bar. Don't be afraid to ask for an upgrade.

An old fashioned hotel in Haarlem, quite far away from the station. The rooms are old fashioned and tatty, the bathrooms need updating. If you get a room with a balcony at the front of the hotel, these can be noisy because youths congregate outside the hotel in the square and make noise, ESP at weekends. On the good side,... More

I stayed here on business for three days, and ate at the restaurant twice. The service was good, and the room was clean and very comfortable. It is pretty close to Schiphol airport. One con is that parking is extra.

Dear Mr Rumley, Thank you for staying at the Carlton Square hotel and we appreciate your nice comments on Tripadvisor. Unfortunately parking is quite expensive in most cities in the Netherlands. We do advise most guests to either travel by public transport or try to park just outside of the city centre to avoid any parking fees. Haarlem does offer... More

Was initially disappointed at distance from Amsterdam (4 train stops) but quickly realised this was a lovely town and a really nice comfortable hotel - best bed and pillow for ages! Will definitely recommend people stay here if visiting Amsterdam as this town has canals, lovely buildings and museums too and is no where near as busy so very relaxing... More

My husband and I spent 6 nights in early October and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We took the bus or train to Amsterdam daily and enjoyed coming back to quiet Haarlem for dinner and the evening. The restaurant serves a buffet breakfast which was very convenient. We also had an excellent dinner at the restaurant seated next to the chef... More
